Cam Overlap

What is a cam overlap value to stay at or under to maintain good drivability with a cam?

10* and under is what I recommend. Also stay under 230* intake duration.

Was thinking of running the TSP 225/236 .629"/615" 113 LSA, 109 ICL seems like a good all around street cam, makes good power and only has 4.5 degrees overlap. Small cam but I just cruise on the street and this seems like it will work good.

I'm at 5.9 degrees overlap with 227/236. 113 +3

Very nice street manners for a cammed car.

That is the one thing I miss about a carb and distrubutor. We did not have to worry about drivability, bucking or surging like you have to with these computer cars.

Bo's suggestion is on the mark. All subjective to the person driving but this guidance is a very good place to start.

Overlap will act different depending on valve events.

If the overlap period on intake valve open isnt very large but the overlap period on the exhaust close is large it can still drive good.

The more overlap you put on the intake open side it will drive rougher at slower engine speeds.

Yes its in the intake centerline and split but thats all in general rule of thumb for the average street guy that I was talking about.
