So just over a week to go. Car is back on the road but still have a fairly long list of things to finish up. i tried desperately NOT to have all these things come down to the last minute but....
of course yesterday I just about had a mental break down. Took the car to a local Chrysler dealership I use for an oil change.... and they bashed the front end on a curb. the CF lip busted in two, the bumper flexed and buckled and the paint cracked about 8 inches. As bad as that is..... it is all but IMPOSSIBLE to get a replacement paint match. This is an oil based custom tinted paint and though I was able to get some paint in the US.... CANNOT find the tint. I upgraded a bunch of electrical issues... stereo, blue tooth audio, XM radio, Escort 9500 radar and some LED lights. Iggy finally got his prototype 100% carbon fiber trunk installed. It IS the prototype so not perfect BUT.... REALLY nice piece... 7 lbs.

You're going to have a blast Sean. Don't sweat the little stuff, in the end you may find that it's not even a blip on the radar. The other memories will far outweigh the minor stuff.
Word of caution. Brock gives a heads-up to all law enforcement agencies along the route. It usually works out best to go 10mph over the limit. This allows for less fuel use (less stops) and far less stress. Going really fast on highways for a long time will wear you out. It's a marathon.....

Shaun, you'd be well advised to meet, and make friends with, Robert Dubler from Switzerland. Hard to miss his team, what with three entries, likely all in HHR SSs this year. Robert has, extant, the best Overall finish in a (relatively stock) Gen-5 Camaro SS, a 17th Place in '10. Besides being a Top 10 person, period, he'll give you some ideas on what to expect with your Camaro. Besides, I believe this is his 21st One Lap, and he is a legendary driver AND Chevy performance owner. Among MANY, he owns one of the two '68 L-88 Corvettes that raced at Le Mans in '68 (not by him), and he still runs it in European Historic races.
BTW, he had an "exciting" One Lap, last year, when the computer went wonky at Road America and he destroyed a CTS-V wagon when the brakes totally failed...which he literally walked away from, after putting the car OVER the tire barrier... Kinda puts YOUR paint issue in perspective... . Last edited by LOWDOWN; 04-18-2013 at 08:21 PM. |

I'm NOT a speed demon by any measure.... I have had two speeding tickets in 10 years BUT..... thought I would invest in my first detector for this event. I'm really looking forward to meeting ALL my Camaro brothers.... of EVERY generation.

I have read and seen ALL I could online about OLOA 2012 so I am aware of Robert. What a story although also somewhat terrifying.... It seems Robert is able to chalk down such a wreck to an "experience". ( I know we went straight to the nearest dealership and bought a used Dodge crossfire so as to finish the event). I do that to my car..... going to be a LONG walk home.
:-) :-)

There will be three early f-bodies competing in Vintage American. James Shipka/Mary Pozzi in their defending champion One Lap Camaro, Mike Hickman/Damon Josz in their seven-time class champion 2nd-gen, and the Honor Flight Camaro with myself and co-driver Jon Mahn. There's even going to be an AMX in VA this year! Though the Big Bore class is the top of the heap, the classifications make for some great cars and competition. 550hp Honda minivans? Very cool stuff.

Shaun, we had 25 entries over a 20 consecutive year run in the One Lap, with 2nd Overall twice including a tie for the highest-ever finish by an F-Body (tieing LPE's Silver Bullet T/A), and raised a LOT of money over the years for the Canadian Cancer Society.
We used the One Lap as a "Terry Fox Run by car", collecting pledges on a penny-per-mile basis, regardless of our finishing positions. Since we were gonna do the events, anyway, we decided to do a lil "fun(d)raising", which assisted greatly with finding $pon$or$ as well. Eventually, we received direct support from GM - Pontiac-GMC, including the use of a SEMA Show concept truck which won Truck-SUV class. The One Lap is NOT like the Power Tour...this one takes the fun-level to an all-time HIGH! Good Luck! |
