what causes drone?

I recently put a borla s-type axle back on my 1LE. It sounds great around town but when I took it out on its first major road trip I was surprised at the drone.

Can someone explain what causes drone? I don't understand the mechanics of it.

At 70 mph in 6th gear the drone is unbearable. The same speed in 5th gear and no drone at all.

I found I prefer 5th gear on the open highway anyway, 6th just doesn't have the giddy-up I want when overtaking. After 1000 miles this week I gladly gave up a few mpgs in 5th for no drone and power on demand.

Drone is harmonic frequencies created in the exhaust waves interacting with the body of the car and at certain low rpm speeds, like freeway speeds that drone or humming sound really messes with your ears. For about 150-200 you can have a muffler shop make some J pipes like I did or get them from Solo exhaust.
