Anyone up the LS3 ignition timing?

Hey guys,

I'm playing with a Diablo Trinity on my 2010 LS3 Camaro. I just purchased a custom email tune from a non-forum supported vendor. He said that he only modified the fuel/airflow tables.

When I used to tune carbureted small blocks, I would up the ignition timing. on an engine with 9.5:1 compression, I could run above 33* of timing, sometimes as high as 36*.

My LS3 seems to be only running 21-26* of timing at WOT, with a couple degrees of KR here and there. Has anyone upped their timing using a Diablo Trinity? Is that dangerous due to the high compression?

On 91 octane mine is happy around 23-25. With no kr. Ls3s don't like much higher.

Well, I'm glad I asked before I adjusted it it. I assumed with the higher compression that 30* or greater might be risky, but I was thinking of bumping mine up to 26-28* before I started this thread.

When I got my SCTX4 the canned tune was meh....I'm at the 93 tune and set all the options for MAX POWER(lol) but did not f wit timing....then after researching and reading the posts went with dynoSteve..I sent him car spec's and he sent me(same day!) his tune..I installed it and MASSIVE improvement....his tune modifies EVERYTHING..I can pass ANY smog test and the cars learning features are still active, so the more I drive the smarter the car gets...2 weeks ago drove from Savannah Ga back to MD over Blue Ridge PWKY and car had ZERO probs...sea level to 4000'...

I do data loggin and the parameters are all so smooth plus Steve is super nice answering any questions PLUS you get FREE tune upgrades as you "will" continue to mod your ride..

Malice..Jarhead? Former Navy bro...peace out

If you're already experiencing knock then the last thing you want to do is add timing without knowing WHY there is knock. A new engine is far more expensive than an in-person dyno tune that can monitor vitals while making adjustments.

The cylinder head is so much improved from a small block that you end up with much less total timing. As a small block tuner you may be familiar with how a "fast-burn" head usually requires a little less timing (~32* total) than a regular old iron head, well, an LSx is just another step in that direction. You'll find a little dip in the timing right around peak torque (peak cylinder pressure occuring in the 4000-5000rpm area) and then it'll run back up just a little into the higher rpms, but not usually more than 26-28*.

Why would you think it is a good idea to raise your timing higher when you are getting KR now?

That brings me to my next question. If false KR a big issue in tuning the LS3? In LS1s and older 3.8 V6s, I remember hearing about de-sensitizing the knock sensors, because they would pick up non-related noises and pull timing. Has that been solved?

only way to tell if it is false knock is run high octane see if it goes away... if it doesn't probably false knock, and even then who knows, one day its false, next day weather is worse or bad gas and now it is real knock...

The solution has always been the same. Immediately find a different tuner who doesn't turn off the knock sensors and fixes the vibration so he doesn't grenade your engine to give you a higher dyno number.
