Tire deflectors & splash shield removal

My 2022 SS 1LE owners manual says to change out the tire deflectors and remove splash shields for track driving. The manual & pics aren’t super clear though. Are these steps for ZLE only? Page 187-190 in the manual.

Should I at least remove the circular tin splash shields adjacent to the rotors for better cooling?

You are advised to remove the tire deflectors (might as well leave them off permanently if you don't mind the minuscule mpg loss) for track driving, but you should already have the small splash shields installed on your 1LE, unlike on the SS with its large C-shaped shields, so nothing to do on that front.

The manual also mentions an air scoop ("tall deflector", see yellow marker on the pic) that will pick up air and divert it to the brakes, you may want to install that as well, but that should indeed be removed afterwards or else it will hang too low and get caught easily on the street and driveways.

[Caveat: I have a 2018, so please verify all this in your 2022 manual.]

The metal SS track splash shield (#1 in the center column of the manual picture posted by arpad_m) swap is time consuming and probably unnecessary on the SS 1LE if running stock brake pads and stock tires. It is around half of the size of the regular SS metal splash shield in that picture. The brake caliper bolts have red threadlocker from the factory and one of mine wouldn't budge with a corded electric impact even after heating the bolt with a small handheld propane torch for over 2 minutes beforehand. I ended up paying a shop to break them loose for me and they had to put the car on a lift and use a long breaker bar standing up underneath to get enough leverage. Even their air impact didn't work.

I bought the kit and installed the SS track plastic front brake air deflectors immediately and left them installed permanently (quick/easy, just note the install directions about the proper wiring harness clip orientation) but waited until my front rotors finally needed to be replaced a few months ago (3 years and many track days after I bought the car) to install the track SS metal splash shields.

You may even be fine with the stock SS 1LE front brake air deflectors especially if running stock brake pads. I never experienced brake pad fade with stock brake pads and tires even with ambient temperatures above 90°F at several different tracks, with 98°F at COTA being the highest.

Are these track deflectors supposed to come with the car or is it something we have to buy?

Also wondering this. I had some goodies in the trunk when I took delivery, but these were not included.

Thank you all for the info. This is a great, helpful group.

My manual looks the same. I don’t have those tall shields though.

Mine came with the tall deflectors in the trunk, but mind you, I have non-1LE 2SS. Perhaps these aren't applicable to the 1LE due to its lower ride height... but then I think the manual would at least state that somewhere.

I think they don't come in the trunk for SS 1LEs but I bought my car used so I'm not 100% sure. Nothing from the track deflector kit was installed on my car when I bought it which is most likely how it came from the factory.

The part number is in post #11 here. It is around $30 from a dealership parts department or less if ordered online but then you have to pay shipping: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=571946

I’m gonna press without them. The first track day at speed ventures focuses on fundamentals vice killer lap times. I won’t be flat out so I won’t worry about them for a while

SS/1LE Tire deflectors & Splash Shield

Front tire air deflectors are not used on the SS 1LE (ref TSB 17-NA-104, page 4, attached below)

The SS/1LE does not come equipped with tire deflectors and already has the small splash shield installed.

NOTE: Rubber boot on tie rod end and lower ball joint could be damaged due to heat if no shield installed.

From Camaro Models Track Preparation Guide

REPLACE THE TIRE DEFLECTOR AND FRONT DISC BRAKE SPLASH SHIELD

Model: Camaro SS Coupe only

Before any racing event, remove the tire deflectors in the front of the vehicle and replace the original control arm deflector and front disc brake splash shield with the tall deflector and small splash shield (found in the trunk). Racetrack driving with the original front disc brake splash shield and front tire deflector may result in brake pedal fade due to high rotor temperatures. For full details on how to install the tall deflector and small splash shield, see the Camaro Owner’s Manual.

The stock SS 1LE rotor splash shield (top of picture) is smaller than the one on a stock SS, but the one from the track kit is even smaller (bottom of picture).

Like I mentioned before, I had no issues with running the stock ones for 3 years of track days on my SS 1LE with stock brake pads and stock tires.

Here's a picture of the track splash shield installed (passenger's side...I didn't take a picture of driver's side with the rotor off).

You can also see the plastic track air deflector installed. I'm using 2 zip ties linked togrther to help hold it in place since the head of 2 of those 3 bolts snapped off on that side. That may have been caused by overtightening them and/or scraping because I leave them on the car all of the time. The alignment tech didn't tighten them back up enough one time and some of them came out while driving which is what caused me to tighten them more. The plastic deflectors are very flexible so the scraping causes minimal damage. The first zip tie fix failed after a while. I probably need to replace the zip ties annually as a precaution or finally get around to removing the half bolts stuck in those 2 holes with an extractor so I can get rid of the zip ties.
