Consumer Reports Oil Testing Results Consumer Reports, with one of the most widely respected product testing laboratories in the world has just released the results of an extensive test on oil brands and oil changes, as well as other issues regarding car care. In the process, the test demolished much of the conventional wisdom regarding car lubrication. The two most surprising results: the frequency with which oil is changed doesn't matter after the first few oil changes on a new engine, and the type or brand of oil used can not be shown to make any difference. The testers placed freshly rebuilt engines in 75 New York taxis and then ran them for nearly two years, with each cab racking up 60,000 miles, placing different brands and weights in different cars and changing the oil at 3,000 miles in half the cars and 6,000 in the other half. At the conclusion of the test period, the engines were torn down, measured and inspected. The conclusions: Regardless of brand of oil or weight, no measurable differences could be observed in engine wear. Furthermore, there was no difference among cars which had oil changed at the shorter or longer interval. Does this have any bearing on the enthusiast's car, which is given almost the opposite usage stored for long periods of time then started and driven for short distances? The tests suggested that our type of usage would build up sludge and varnish, indicating that an annual or semi-annual oil change is a good idea regardless of how much mileage the car is driven. But there is little indication that the brand or weight needs to be given serious consideration, and synthetic oil has no discernible advantage over the old stand-bys. Thanks Faninc....given that Consumer Reports has no ax to grind either way, I think the tests are fair and probably makes sense.
I would be interesting for them to do tests on oil filters.

I am running Mobil 1 in my V6 as well as my 2008 CTS. Both have ran very smooth on Mobil1. I feel if I am going to spend that kind of money on cars, I want the best for them. Run Mobil 1 and enjoy your new Camaro for a long long time!

Okay folks, I just bought 6 qts of Mobil1 and the lable on this says "FULLY SYTHETIC" and it meets both GM 4718M and GM 6094M specifications. I do think they have some blended ones that are Synthetic blends.

Mobil 1 is NOT fully synthetic. I believe do to some rulings it can be labled as such because it has synthetics in it but I believe it is Type III with PAO or ester in it. Dont quote me as I am still learning but it isnt fully synthetic as I believe Redline, Amsoil and one other is.
Mobil One is fine to use tho so dont sweat it. Cheers k |

I'm confused about whether I should get synthetic or regular. The tech at the chevy dealership said that the v6 comes with regular motor oil and if you drove 1500 miles with it then you should stick to it instead of synthetic. He also said that you should stock to the oil with which u did the engine break-in. Idk what to do? Any suggestions?
