Dexos is all about saving money and streamlining. Now GM has to stock only one oil for it's entire car and truck line.
This new standard must be justified to have adaquate protection from the Cruz to the ZR1. So they created it....Now they don't have to put Mobil 1 in as the factory fill..... Brilliant huh. Stick with the top brands and everything will be fine and just as it always was. The oil companies are not going to reformulate just for GM. My 2011 has a Mobil 1 cap so that is what is going in. My 2 cents on Corporation crapola.

I've got 7400 miles and have had the oil changed twice by the dealer. They used Mobile 1 both times and never mentioned any other oil. I am going to stick with the Mobile 1 as long as I own the car.

i,ve used high rpm quakerstate for yrs in my silverados. it used to be 4by4 designated oil. then changed to high rpm. its the same as dexos. there semi synthetic . its good oil. 2 trucks and my 2011 is gonna run it too. a couple hundred thousand miles on that oil and they always ran like new. run what u want. but its made for extreme applications. unless your racing nascar,, i would,nt worry.semi synthetic is fine. my trucks always ran higher oil pressure that the same trucks my buddies drove,, they used non-syn oils. mobil1 is good oil,,,its not neccessary to maintain a clean engine with lubrisity. lol,,is that a word,,.

Dexos is actually a lower quality oil than synthetic and I will be sticking to the Mobil 1.

Valvoline Full Synthetic for the Camaro. Been a Valvoline customer for 25 years. All my cars have gone the distance. My DD Toyota is sitting at 243k and I rag the piss out of that car. My last two cars (both GM cars) were at around 230k when they were sold or totalled. The Camaro seems to like the SynPower.

Dexos is an oil SPECIFICATION. It is NOT an brand.
Dexos 1 is the specification for gasoline engines and states the MINIMUM standards in cleaners, temperature resistance, wear resistance, etc. that an oil must meet to be labeled "Dexos1" on the packaging. Daxos 2 is for diesel engines. Mobil 1 IS dexos 1 approved. So is Amsoil OE and XL. Quaker state UD Full Synthetic is Dexos 1, so is Pennsoil Platinum and I'm relatively sure Red Line, Royal Purple, Valvoline and others have a synthetic that meets the standards. So check your favorite oil brand, make sure it lists "Dexos1" in the standards, and keep doing what you've been doing. Nothin' to see here, Folks. Move along. |

Oil questions and answers at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/ good luck! Another forum to spend countless hours on. Mobil 1 paid for the GM cert.....your good to go. It was silly when people were saying 'my oil cap says Mobil 1 but my dealer says not to use it'. Thanks to Mobil 1 for playing nice...Pennzoil ultra is factory fill for Ferrari and is also a very wonderful synthetic. I haven't done the research on Amsoil and Royal Purple so I won't comment.

My dealer says they never heard of Dexos1 anything..Therefore, they don't touch my car. I use Pennzoil Full Synthetic..It is Dexos1 approved, and the 6 qts plus filter for the V6 was $32.
