has anyone seen any non-bias comparisons between Mobile 1, Castrol Edge, Royal Purple, Amsoil, or other oil?

Mobil 1 is not a full synthetic oil. It is a type 3. It will not affect "break-in." It is not "more slippery" than conventional oil.
I grow weary of this topic. John B.

OLM on my Avalance with non-synthetic oil gets about 7000k miles before it gets below 25% life left. Oil doesn't have to be synthetic to get long life. It just depends on your driving conditions. Baby it and it will last, drive it like you stole it and you better change it sooner.

I know the Cadillac 3.6 was posted in this thread to show the Mobil 1 cap but just to make sure no one is mixed up this is the 3.6 Camaro engine.

Thats true Mobil 1 is not a true synthetic oil, Castrol Edge is excellent, been using it every 3k miles in my 4 banger Mitsubishi Eclipse and boy does she run clean and quiet.
Probably gonna use it in my new 2LT Camaro which I should be receiving in 2 weeks. |

I am confused a bit. The owners manual and my salesman tell me to let the car's computer tell me when I need an oil change. My gut says every 3,000 miles the oil should be changed. I called a service tech and he said he would go with the 3,000 miles. Seems to be some mixed opinions on here also. Some say follow the specs and go by the car's computer and others say every 3,000 some even say the first one should be at 1,500miles. I have about 2,700 miles on my 3.6 ltr in hte 2LT and the computer says I have like 78% oil life left but I feel very anxious cause I have always changed the oil every 3,000 miles. What are the v6 owners doing re oil changes?

Well, mine is getting the first oil change done this week @ 1500 miles and I'm switching over to Mobil 1. After that, I'm leaving it up to the computer or 10k miles, whichever comes first.

I have an app. for sat the first one is free then every 5th one is free. So for now I think I will keep my apt for sat. I have like 2700 miles on her now. I called a few dealers and spoke to service and get mixed results. Some swear by the OLM in the GM motors and others say dont trust it.

the recommended first oil change is at 1500 miles. after that, follow the Oil life monitor. the first oil change is the big one as it is the break in of the motor and as we have seen picks up a lot of small shavings/particles. the OLM cant tell you if the oil has shavings in it, just how well the oil is holding up. the oil itself is still good, but it can be full of shavings and other particles that can get carried into other close tolerance areas and cause damage.

3000 mile oil changes are a waste of natural resources in almost all circumstances.
Send your oil sample to Blackstone Labs if you don't trust the oil life monitor. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ I'll do a couple of changes before 1500 miles, though, just to get build particles out, however. Educate yourself: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ John B.

I just have one question:
What are the significant/meaningful differences between using Mobil 1 and Royal Purple? |

Between USING the two different oils? Not much. Both will probably provide protection and longevity beyond the useful life of the rest of the vehicle, meaning the engine will be in better shape than the rest of the car.
Changing the oil on a regular basis is a much bigger factor than what you actually use in the crankcase. My $.02. YMMV. John B.

Changed mine at 1400 miles and cut open the filter. Did'nt see much more debris - shavings - than I normally see when I've looked at my bike or other car filters at changes. I expected to see a fair amount of 'break in' metal, but was not the case.
The Chevy Service mgr. told me don't bother changing it until the life monitor says so, but I wanted to do early anyway and to be honest, although I really could give little credence to the idea that after the first change the car seems to have a bit more 'get up and go', I was surprised. It actually seems to. It may be my imagination and wishful thinking, plus I am now tending to get on it a bit more. The 5 Qt. jug of Mobil 1 at Wal Mart is not much more than buying a 5 of Castrol 5W-30 I use in my other cars ... but that additional single quart of Mobil 1 was rediculous at $6+. As far as when to change, I really did'nt see much evidence of wear that justified changing it prior to 3000, but there was still 1500 to go before I got to that point. Anyway, if not only for piece of mind, the cost at 1500 miles isn't that much a stretch so why not make yourself feel good about your car ?!
