Flying to work!

Every morning, I strap myself in to the cockpit of my 2014 ZL1 convertible, tactical call sign, Scarlet. I reach up and push the overhead button to raise the hangar (garage) door. Next, switch on the ignition, wait a couple seconds, and engine start. Oh how I love the sound of power as my engine roars to life.

Slowly I taxi back out on to the street, switching from reverse to manual, I keep my foot on the brakes so I can complete the pre-flight checklist. I plug in the radar detector and turn on my phone's GPS mapping. Bitchin’ Betty wakes up and asks "Are you going to work?" I reply, “Yes,” and she begins calculating the standard route of flight. Meanwhile, I scan all the gauges and make sure everything is set.

ME: "Las Vegas Ground, Scarlet, Camaro ZL1, taxi with information Lima."

LVG: "Scarlet, taxi Bravo then Delta, hold short Runway 28 at the back gate, departure frequency one two niner point three (insert your favorite radio station channel).

I ease off the brakes and slowly taxi forward giving the engine and tires a generous time to warm up. Brake release, I move forward at idle power, which is neighborly of me. The exhaust rumbles but is controlled. After all, noise abatement procedures are in effect. At the back gate, I reach up to activate the gate. As it opens, I scan the instrument cluster one last time; all gauges are up and green.

ME: "Las Vegas Tower, Scarlet ready for takeoff."

LVT: "Scarlet, taxi in to position and hold."

I creep on to a 2 mile long road with no public access. It sure looks like a runway to me!

LVT: "Scarlet, cleared for takeoff, winds 280 at 5, when able left 220, contact departure passing 500 feet."

Music to my ears! I push the throttle full forward. Scarlet roars out her approval pinning me back in my seat. We gain speed fast down the straight away! Passing 45 mph, rotate and we’re airborne. Afterburners now as the supercharger kicks in. She quickly accelerates through 60, then 85, at over 100 mph I let off on the throttle, reducing power to normal legal speeds. It's time to settle in for the always delightful cruise to work.

This is what causes permagrin!

Marcus

Rico, I've flown through Texas many times. Not in a chopper though. Thanks for taking time out to read my story.
