Dyno tune comparisons?
Anyone ever done a dyno test between the tunes that come with various hand-held programmers? How about a custom tune vs a canned one from the programmer manufacturer? Or a custom but canned one from a tuner vs one done when MY car is the one on the rollers?
I'm thinking that a custom canned tune will beat any canned from the manufacturer due to a tuner being more willing to go leaner while the canned tune from the programmer manufacturer will still stay overcautious. However, I'm not sure if you have to buy one of those hand-held tuners to get a custom tune or if the shop just plugs the tune in for you. In other words, do I buy a hand-held tuner and get someone like Janetty to give me their custom but still basically canned tune (since I can't get my car directly to them), or can I just pay for the dyno time someplace local and save some $$$ on the programmer?

The 5th gen\ LS3 platform is new to me, but don't they have laptop programs like FAST or EFI Live like they do the 4th gens? A lot of shops dyno tune your car with the laptop and make changes at the same time.
From observing in the past, the custom tune fits your car better with\ without mods but is hard to do yourself if you are not familiar with the programs and you have to end up going back to the tuner to change anything. On the other hand, using the hand programmer might be easier but might not get as detailed as a custom tune. I have seen some pretty mean tunes on cars at the track too, if that is your goal.

I got a Diablo from JRE and had to go in to get the trans tuned since it doesn't support the A6. The engine tune was perfect... my tuner said he could take my money and probably get me 1 or 2 hp, but it wasn't worth it since the handheld was spot on.
Take it for what it's worth... just my experience...

well if you have CAI or CAI + cat back then i would go with a canned tune... but when you get headers . you will WANT a custom tune
