Rally Yellow -> Bumblebee Sunrise for $10-$20?

Hey all you Bumblebee lovers. I had a thought today on how to get the yellow to orange color shift sort of like Bumblebee has. I came across a website http://www.paintwithpearl.com/ they sell "candy" and pearlescent paint additives. They say the additives can be used in other things besides paint, like concrete sealers and latex paints for instance.

So here was my thought. Since I will be putting like 20 coats of Zaino on my Camaro when it comes anyway, in the first few coats add some of the color additives to the Z2/ZFX mix and get the "Bumblebee" effect.

I emailed the guy at Paint with Pearl on the idea, and his response was the following:
"Yes, you can add an orange ghost to your wax but it will wear off quick in the elements. If you want something permanent you can pay a painter to "scuff" your clearcoat off and add orange or gold ghost to your new coat of clear. That will be permanent for years to come. It shouldn't cost you but $1000 or so."

I'm really not too worried about it wearing off quickly since 1-2 coats lasts 6 months anyway, 20 coats should last much longer, and I will be storing the vehicle in the winter besides.

So I ordered a pack of Shimmer Orange Copper Candy Pearl - http://www.paintwithpearl.com/candy/pwp532/pwp532.htm and the Orange Ghost Pearl - http://www.paintwithpearl.com/Pearls/pwp217/pwp217.htm
$22.98 with shipping.

I'll do a little experimenting on my kids Ultimate Bumblebee Transformer when I get the stuff and let you know how it works. For $20 I figure its worth a shot!

That's not a bad idea.

I know a lot of people won't like this, but you need to do some stuff to keep with the Transformer theme, like vertical doors.

I got the powders today they are EXTREMELY fine, I think the plan is going to work out perfectly. Now I just have to find something to try them on, Ultimate Bumblebee seems to have some sparkle to him already so I dont think he will be a good test.. :(

I don't have it in front of me, but the bigger yellow with black stripes Jada Camaro I've got I think has a bit of a metallic flake to it. At the very least I know the one I've got here at work does.

You could buy a diecast and throw a coat of yellow enamel on it, though. Just use a hotwheels or cheaper Jada one and it won't cost you that much.

Sounds like it may work. The only thing I'd be a bit concerned about are tiny scratches that the powder may cause when applying the Zaino. Not that the Zaino wouldn't smooth that out but the underlying clearcoat may get scratched.

The added advantage of adding the powder to the Zaino instead of having a painter apply a new coat of tinted clear is that if you ever get in an accident, the base rally yellow is going to be a lot easier to color match (with the Zaino stripped off) than the paint with the tinted clear.

Go for it and let us know how it works out....

I'll probably put a couple "clean" coats of Z2 on first as a base, then a couple with the flakes, and then some more clean over the top. When I said it was extremely fine, I mean it is crazy tiny, I don't think it will scratch the clear really.

But they're not vertical doors. They pivot on the same hinge as when you open the door. You can see how it works with one of the Hasbro figures.

Obviously the movie version should be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more complicated, but you get the basic idea. =P
