I think Autos still beat SRT8 instead of 426HP, its 400HP at the Crank. I Think thats still higher than the SRT8...

did I just stumble under a bridge? kinda smells like troll.....

just in case I didn't.... The L99 has Active Fuel Management which does shut down cylinders, but it cycles which ones are on and off to keep the engine in balance. Doesn't necessarily just shut down to 4 cylinders as far as I'm aware

Yes, the L99 has AFM, which shuts down half the cylinders when cruising or at idle.

you would think they would get better gas mileage than the v6's then.

yeah, it's not exactly as black and white as less cylinders = better gas mileage

I bet putting a 4 pot in this car would get terrible mileage beacuse it would have to work so hard to move the thing around. I know my s10 originally had a 2.5 L and when I swapped in the 6.6 L I didn't lose any gas mileage really in the city because the engine hardly had to work at all to move that truck around. went everywhere at 1200 rpm rather than 2500.

and you have to take into account that the engine isn't ALWAYS running on 4. so it'll be some sort of average between 4 and 8 depending how hard you drive it.

is reason for the quiet idle in the L99 the AFM? i've listened to two auto SSs at idle and they seemed quiet... are the LS3s louder at idle?

I think AFM only shuts off cylinders under light load crusing, but runs on all 8 at idle to keep the idle smooth.

The SRT8 has 425hp. Camaro will still have a slightly better weight to power ratio, though. It will probably come down to a drivers race. Whether the SRT8 has a manual or automatic may make a difference too.

only problem with that is that I thought it cut down to 4 when cruising. So it doesn't need to "lug" all that weight since it's already in motion. No?
