ZL1 Hands down. I just bought a 2013 ZL1 and didn't think about the new ss.
Many dealers were pushing it though.

ZL1 can take some serious mods and it is very unlikely to break anything. The new SS will scatter its drive train way before the ZL1 will have any issue at all. 700+ to the wheels is easy to do safely. Then there is the styling. The 6th gen looks like it was designed in Asia or something. It has a polarizing hate it or love it look with the everyone has it wide mouth front opening. I think it performs well, but that is mostly because the car has been reduced in size. I would choose the Z all day, or skip into a Vette.

I'd say ZL1 just because you will save money both in mods you'll add on later, and in depreciation. The ZL1 will hold onto its value longer than those 16s will

This!
For the same price of 6th.gen you can get a newer ZL1 with low miles.
Also the 6th gen. rear seat is useless.

If you plan on modding a 16, forget it. Just buy 13 ZL1. Chevrolet did all the mods for you!

Buy the Z. 10000 miles is like new and the SS doesn't hold a candle to it. Depreciation will be your friend with the Z.

I would test drive both cars and decide by weighing the pros and cons of each car. The ZL1 is a great platform to mod, but it's substantially heavier than the new SS. The performance of the new SS is impressive ( read the A8 is a great trans) and there is good aftermarket support for the LT1 thanks to the C7 Vette. Browse the other Corvette Forum and you will see some stout numbers for n/a, FI, E85, etc. To me the cons of the new SS are the high msrp for a well optioned car and a very tight engine bay compared to the 5th gen which would be a factor for me (shades of the 4th gen).

I agree with everyone else here. Seems like a no brainer to go with the '13 ZL1. After 2 years the 6th Gen SS will be a dime a dozen just like the 5th gen is now.

Try to find a left-over ZL1 somewhere; That will just put a sweetener on top of the deal.

This is a tough choice, as I'm of the school of thought that nothing can compare to the experience of buying a new car. If that is what you're looking for and you like the 6th gen then you should consider the 1LE. The new 1LE will be a bit closer to the ZL1 in terms of handling. Good luck.

My first post was about this. You have to realize that a 16SS is not the same car a ZL1 is. Even if the 0-60 is similar the power isn't. That is fairly obvious to feel from a test drive. The SS sits higher, has less visability (no matter what the magazines say) and almost no back seat. The tires are smaller, the brakes are much smaller, and the presence of the car is infinitely smaller. The new SS is a very cute, quick car. It feels incredibly polished, and Euro. Makes me think BMW coupe. Its full of "neat" little amenities that may appeal to a daily driver. However, the ZL1 is the badass monster that your uncle always kept out in the shed with a tarp over it. It wreaks of muscle. Its obnoxious, its mean, its sexy. At the same time the mag ride and micro fiber suede take care of your ass on a long ride. If this is something you are truly considering than wait at least until the 1LE is on the market, because in the grand scheme of things the 16SS is going to be a dime a dozen and fairly forgettable compared to the ZL1. You would have to weigh in how long you plan on keeping the car. Just imagine owning a GT500, and then switching to the 15 GT when the body style changed. 1 year later there are 800 to 1 GTs on the road in comparisons to GT500s. 30 years from now when you walk out to your dream garage and pull a tarp off a car are you going to be showing your grandson just another SS, or are you going to show him the car that changed shit for the muscle car world...

Depends what your goals are. A ZL1 is a better starting platform. You can also expect to turn about 14mpg on average with a ZL1, whereas a 2016 SS will net you around 17-20mpg depending on driving type.

ZL1's are also known to have blower issues. Whether they have been largely dealt with over the years, there are simply more failure points in a ZL1.

For a toy car, a ZL1 is likely a better platform, but for something you'll drive regularly the new SS makes a lot more sense. A ZL1 will be a much deeper money pit over time. An SS is an outstanding daily driver. The ZL1...not so much.
