I understand where you're coming from, but no way I'd be making what I am now if I hadn't gone or it would have at least been a LOT harder to achieve.

It really depends on what you plan on doing.. If you really want to go to a medical/vet/dental/optometry or other similar type of school, I would say forget about it. Not posssible.
But if your college career is to do something else, it might be easier to do.

My strategy in college was to have a used, paid-off Camaro. It was a 1997 V6, and I went to college starting in 2001.
Not having a car payment was really great during those times of self-discovery and trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life. It also made finding and changing jobs much less stressful because essentially I had no expenses. I was lucky in that I received scholarships for over 60% of my schooling and my folks generously picked up the rest. Like you, I had saved and worked a bunch before going off to school, so simply having that cash reserve put me ahead of everyone else. I drew on it slowly throughout the year and then replenished it when I could work full-time in the summer and during breaks. It ensured I always had "a pot to piss in." Even driving a used, no-options 1997 Camaro...it was one of the nicest cars on campus. I paid extra to park in a gated and monitored lot for that reason. Roommates and other folks I know tried street-parking, or parking in some of the open lots around school, and they had their cars vandalized, broken into, dinged, and hit. Eventually I moved into a house with some friends, and there was plenty of room to park and someone virtually always home to look out for stuff. I'm not saying you shouldn't get A car...but sometimes things in college change unexpectedly or you find yourself in sucky situations where it's tough to get a job. Life is so much less stressful when you can just float over those times without getting yourself into a hole. If you buy a new Camaro now, at the end of 4 years you'll have a beat up 4 year old Camaro that's probably not paid off yet, if you're planning on doing a 60 month loan. If it were me, I'd buy something cheap and fun for now, that won't eat up all your cash, and save for when you get that first big job out of college and can throw down unreasonably on something flashy like an SS. Just my $0.02. |

Get the car after or last year. Depending on ur major n choice of school any money will be a blessing while in attendance. That would make it easier on ur self, I remember college, spent weekends in the lab getting work done, tutored to make extra cash, its hard to work and complete college, once u graduate and have ur nice paying job with benefits, you're able to whatever. Buts that's just this old persons opinion, in the end its ur choice.

You need to enjoy college. Go to class and get your work finished then go out and have a good time! Work a little bit to afford certain amenities but dont over work yourself. The school work gets stressful at times and you don't want a crazy work schedule to get in the way You'll regret it if you work non stop. Beer cans, eggs, ect. will be all over that thing. I took my tans am to back for a weekend at college to take a girl out and it basically got trashed while I was asleep. Not a chance I'd take my camaro to college. But, it's up to you! I just recommend having fun bc college, while difficult at time, is a blast . . Enjoy it!

This is truth. Everyone likes the dude with spending cash versus the dude with toys that can't enjoy them because he's got no money. |
