For all you home oil changers

I've had the dealer change my oil for the last 2 years & 10 months I'm fairly religious about it every 3000-4000 miles (my son-in-law is my service advisor - READ Discount). I got myself in a tight spot waiting too long and not having time before leaving town for the weekend to get it done. I parked in the boonies at Wally World to buy oil last night and changed it myself for the first time tonight. I also replaced the cabin air filter. I'd like to talk to the guy who designed THAT cover!

Anyway, usually about $65 plus tax for the GM blend with labor. Quaker State Synthetic Blend + the same Delco filter the dealer uses for $45 + 20 minutes on the jack and stand. Another 20 to get the cover off of the cabin air, vacuum out the leaves & replace.

Long & short, I paid myself about $60 an hour to do it myself and didn't have to leave it at the dealer all day while at work. It's a matter of convenience. 6 of one or 1/2 a dozen of the other, as long as my son-in-law works there. Better than Jiffy-Dude!

Carry on...

That's my argument as well. No mileage wasted going to a shop or dealer, and I can do a simple oil change in about 10 minutes in my own garage and it gets done right, every time. It's cheaper for me to do it at home, and I save myself time too.

I personally use Mobil 1 and the GM Oil Filter, takes me usually bout a hour but at least I didnt have to trust someone to tighten everything back up and fill it with enough oil. That Quaker State oil is good stuff my dad has used it for I know of at least 40+ years.

I always feel better about changing my own oil, something a little more satisfying about it knowing I got the good oil in there and saved some money.

Get yourself a pair of ramps and you'll really be cooking!

Its not about cost for me, its about knowing it was done right and the person doing it treated the car like their own. You can't buy that.

Until we bought our first "new" car 11 years ago I had ALWAYS done my own oil changes. Got in the habit of having the dealer do it for a while so there were no warranty issues. Now that I'm getting closer to the end of the Drivetrain Warranty I'm not as critical on it.

I do my own as well so i know its done right and i fill my filter so the engine doesnt go without oil pressure until it fills it. Instant oil pressure, engine doesnt know anything happened.

I used to never fill it on my previous cars, but now I fill the filter too.

Walmart has the full synthetic Quakerstate for about a dollar more than the blend; $21ish dollars for five quarts. They look very similar and I almost picked up the blend by accident. Seems to be well formulated according to tests/analysis I've found on the internet. +1 on filling the filter.

Manual says use Blend so I use Blend, at least until Powertrain warranty is up.
