I take that as a "no"?
Retainer clips don't allow most wheels to fit properly (flat) against the rotor. Factory wheels and some aftermarket wheels have the areas grooved out to accommodate them though. Those are only used to temporarily hold on the rotor during the assembly line process, until the calipers are attached.

Huh!
So in the picture above of someone pointing out the retainer clip on that bolt, is that a mistake? Was that suppossed to be removed if its just for assembly purposes?
I would imagine that shop that put on PQ's wheels would have noticed that and recognized that may be causing a problem if that clip was left on and wasn't supposed to bet here? |

Most tire shops know about removing the clip for aftermarket wheels. Just takes 1 minute with a small flathead and some needlenose pliers to twist/snap them off.
The factory wheels are undercut on the lug area, to clear the clips. Most aftermarket wheels are flat on the backside, they won't fit flat over a clip.

If I ever put my stock wheels back on my car, do I need to put the clips back on too? Or can they go into the trash? (I'm such a noob!)

Yup, leave them off. They serve no purpose anymore. I'm not sure mine ever had them on in the first place. But of course, I had the upgrade 21s put on from the beggining. I'm sure if they ever had any, the dealer discarded them from the beggining. I've only ever seen the clips on anything once before, and even 'I' knew they were non functional. |

Here is a photo of one of my HRE wheels from the backside. You can see how they machined out the lug holes to accommodate these retainers. Also notice how they machined the pockets out between the lugs to lighten the wheels even further. Not all brands do this
