Question. Need to replace cabin and engine air filters
How often does the cabin air filter and engine air filter need to be replaced or changed? And this would be detected during a routine oil change right? I'm just wondering because my original dealership has never told me that but I had to take it to a different dealership due to convenience today and they said I needed cabin and engine air filters changed. Also how can these filters affect the performance of the car if not changed? Thanks

The cabin air freshener is just that, an air filter for inside of car. Engine is way more important obviously because it traps dust and debris from entering your engine. How many miles do you have? Have you ever changed either one previously?

The cabin filter only effects the freshness of the air coming out of the ac/heat and should be checked every oil change and replaced as needed. Typically every 15-20k depending on the type of environment you live in.
A dirty intake filter will reduce the amount of air going into the engine and will reduce the performance of the engine. It too should be checked every oil change and replaced when it is dirty or clogged, typically every 20-25k or two years whichever is first. |

I have about 44,000 miles on it. It's a 2012 and I've never had either changed before or been told I should

I would change the cabin filter at least once a year or sooner if you live in an area that is always dusty. The engine air filter should be checked at every oil change and replaced if it's dirty. If you are staying stock, I would recommend an washable oil filter like AFE, K&N etc. They trap more dirt and last much longer and gives you better performance.

I changed my engine air filter after four seasons and 38,000 miles. The recommended interval is actually 50,000, and I have to admit, the old filter didn't look that dirty. But then, I don't drive during sand and salt season.

yah, change em both for sure now! I would refer to your manual. It clearly states when you should change them. Maybe highlight them both for easy reference.

FYI , your hvac system will blow harder /more air without the cabin air filter. If you open your windows you get unfiltered air any ways . Take it out and toss it . Saves money and gives better ac performance in the summer in Phoenix.

Check owners manual. Every 25k or sooner.

If you decide to change it, go to Amazon or the like. MUCH cheaper than from the dealer. They carry off brands as well as OEM.

That's not a good idea. I just bought an ACDelco, CF178 from Amazon for twenty something bucks. What's twenty bucks on a car like this? Without a filter all the dirt, bugs and everything else goes into the hvac system. Replace filter per how you drive and where you drive. Common sense and the owners manual is a good reference. If you change it for the first time after about 22,500K miles or two years, the condition of it at that time will tell you if you should have done it sooner or if that's just about right.
