I saw a car start rolling and hit another car just the other day. They had it in neutral with the parking break on. It could have been really bad because there were kids all around, but the car it hit was only five feet behind it.

Neutral with parking brake. Don't park anywhere with a steep enough hill to need to leave it in gear. I have a habit of sitting in the car for a little with the engine running before I get out and don't keep my foot on the clutch, so therefore can't be in gear. Plus when I put in a remote start it will need to be in neutral.

If I'm pointed down hill, reverse with parking brake. Up hill, 1st gear, parking brake.

never used the parking brake when I drive a manual vehicle unless I'm on a hill, just leave it in 1st gear.

Glad somebody has it right. Just like turning your wheels in when parked on a hill just in case.

Step 1
Pull into a parking space. Whenever possible, park perpendicular to the hill.
Step 2
Park parallel to the curb if you must park parallel to the hill. Use your brakes gratuitously while accomplishing this.
Step 3
Turn the steering wheel toward the curb if the car is facing downhill. The front part of the front tire should be turned into the curb.
Step 4
Turn the wheel away from the curb if the car is facing uphill. The back of the front tire should be turned into the curb.
Step 5
Put the car in park. For manual transmissions, leave the car in gear.
Step 6
Set the parking brake.
Step 7
Lift your foot off the brake. If the car slips, park again closer to the curb and reset the wheels against the curb.

If you don't use the parking brake your car will end up in Lake Michigan... or didn't you learn anything from Risky Business?

What could possibly be detrimental to the car by putting it in gear when parked? I don't understand why anyone would NOT put it in reverse or 1st (not bashing anyone, just want to know why??).

1st Gear, Parking Break. Habit for me as well. I even used my parking break on my automatic Mazda Tribute. Habits are hard to break!
