Question Cross Country - Anybody do it?

So I'll be making a move from New Jersey to California sometime in mid July, and I'm debating among other things whether I want to make the drive across the country in my L99 2SS or have the car shipped out and hop on an airplane instead.

I'll be going with my girlfriend and it seems like I'd be saving a couple hundreds bucks doing the drive; having a car shipped out seems to cost anywhere from $800-1000, and the total cost of flying would be around $400 for two (I've got a slight discount). Total cost I would expect to be ~1200-1400.

I've read here that people are getting up to 350 miles a tank with their 2SS, so with a 2900 mile ride I would assume I would need to fill up around 8 times throughout the trip at an average cost of $60 or so. That would equal to around $500 bucks, and I'm guessing with hotels, food and other miscellaneous stuff the total cost would run probably around $900 ball park.

I would guess that I would possibly be saving between $300-$500 bucks making the ride, and seeing the country in my Camaro seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity. What do you all think? Anybody do it before?

Do the road trip.. I went from Cali to Maine about a year or so it was a blast. i was doing about 11 hours a day on the road and didnt even feel tired. Nothing like seeing the country by driving across it!

I've done it probably 25 times, but not from the east coast, from Kentucky. If you've never done it, I highly recommend it, but be prepared for a lot of monotony. You have no idea how big this country really is until you get in a car and drive across it. If you're going do freeways, and I assume you are, try to route yourself onto I-70. I've been across them all and for the most part, I-10, I-40, I-80, and I-90 go around the the pretty stuff, which just adds to the monotony. I-70 is the one exception and it's just as monotonous as the rest, east of Denver. But from Denver west, it has to be one of the most stunning freeway drives in the world. They should do a Modern Marvels episode about I-70 in Colorado. It dumps you off onto I-15 in the in the middle of Utah and that is also pretty to about the Nevada line. Good luck and have a safe trip.

You can stare at the back of an airplane seat anytime. As soon as your plane touches down on the west coast, you'll wish you had drove the Camaro. Stop off in WI on your way through and visit one of the largest car shows in the Midwest.

Drove NY to the West Coast (and way NorthWest to Alaska for that matter!) a few times. If your just going to power through and not make a trip of then fly. However, if you plan on taking your time, hitting the National Parks and such then for sure drive. I usually took 2-3 weeks with lots of stops along the way. Seems to me most of the good stuff starts about halfway accross the country. Man, you could spend weeks in the 4 corners area alone! This country really is stunning ... but as mentioned it is quite large and there is a ton of Monotomy too.

Ditch the GPS, buy an atlas, veer off the interstate and take the two lane highways.
