My Whipple Project...long winter here

Well, the Whipple is here....that's the good news.

http://picasaweb.google.com/zr1gary/...eat=directlink

Have to wait until the snow melts, or I find an enclosed trailer to get this party started....that's the bad news.

Doug Rippie Motorsports is 14 miles from my place, but may as well be 1000 miles with the roads the way they are here in MN

Car currently has ARH long-tubes, 3" cat-backs, GM performance muffs and C2G Cold Air Kit.

Will be adding:

* 2.9 Whipple
* LS9 cam
* Katech timing chain
* Upgraded chain tensioner
* Short-throw shifter
* Autogauge Cobalt fuel pressure gauge
* Autogauge Cobalt boost gauge
* Autogauge dual pillar gauge pod
* RX oil catch can

That's all for now....since I'm 'broke as a drunken sailor'

Guessing the RWHP

In spite of lots of snow in MN...had to get this party started, since scheduling is everything and I want this puppy ready when the snow melts.
Loaded up Camaro on 02/03 and took her to Doug Rippie's (DRM).
They are planning on starting with a baseline dyno on 02/07.
I'll update as things move forward.

Trying to guess the baseline numbers is fun, since the car is not quite stock...
So baseline will be on car with ARH long tube (1 7/8"); 3" catbacks; GM (Borla) muffs; CAI (C2G).....

Randy Rippie (RR) tells me their dyno is 'a bit' conservative...so he's hedging here

My guess is 390rwhp
My brother says 409rwhp
RR says 380 rwhp

Fun...but no real big deal.

The next (after cam and Whipple) will be the fun-run

Baseline Duno Results

Well...here is the baseline run on DRM's 'conservative dyno'....

390RWHP and 375RWT

Doug Rippie will be tuning it next week, after the Wipple and cam are added....so....
I'll be real curious to see what the girl puts out then

650rwhp should be close. Are you planning to upgrade fuel pump? I added a double pump to mine while they had it. Got a good deal on a slightly used one and felt more at ease adding it instead of the BAP. Mine put down 647rwhp with 2" Stainless Works headers, Borla Stinger catback, cat delete, cam, and Rotofab CAI. You are gonna LOVE the Whipple power!!!

Unhappy I'm REALLY confused.....

To: You guys who are actually running OVER 600rwhp AND
Stock Bottom-End

I keep getting this from people who are not over 600rwhp.....

"you CANNOT run that kind of hp without new pistons, etc, etc"

I know that things happen...so who knows, but I do like hearing from those who are 600+ using stock pistons, etc....

My car may see the 1/4 mile once next year just for a few runs to see how it is. Other than that, I drive it maybe 150 miles weekly, for 5 months out of the year. I don't street race and I'm not looking to push the revs too far, so your opinions please.

stock bottom end

I've heard this debated as well. I have read many posts by others on C5 that are running FI over 600rwhp on the stock bottom end. Best I can tell the consensus is you should be good on the stock bottom up to 700hp. Who knows for sure, but there are several folks on here that have put a few thousand miles on their FI cars on the stock bottom end. Forged internals would absolutely give you/me an added level of comfort but I figured if that many are running on the stock bottom end then I would to. If it breaks, it breaks. I guess it comes with the territory when running FI, but like you I don't plan on thrashing on mine. Might see the track once or twice, but mainly a weekend driver/fun car that might get driven 5-7k miles a year.
Forgot to add: The most important action is to make sure the tune is right regardless of stock or forged internals!! Get the AFI too lean and 'BOOM'.

I'm no expert, but I've done a lot of reading and talked with a lot of experts on this as I'm moving up into the same hp range you are working with.

My car is at 500 rwhp right now (L99) with maggie, intake, and headers. I will be adding a cam and torque converter this month. I should be up around 570 rwhp after that.

The shop that dynod my car said they think the stock engine internals are ok up to about 600-650 rwhp. They also said my stock fuel pump with BAP should be ok up to the 570 we're anticipating with the cam, but I may need to upgrade the injectors. I am currently running the 52# ZR1 injectors that came with the maggie which can be modified to 65# injectors if need be. They will determine the duty cycles of the current injectors on the dyno and then decide if they need to be upgraded.

If I go beyond this point (about 570 rwhp), I would definitely go with dual fuel pump system, forged internals and beef up the rear end.
