Microfiber Towel Roundup

We all know there are dozens of different brands of microfiber towels out there. Since I've started detailing, I've been on a quest to seek out the best towels out there. I thought I would post a comparison of the various types I've tried, and I'll update it as I go.

Let's start with drying towels.

I prefer a waffle weave drying towel. I selected three of the best to look at here.

Firs up is the Adam's Great White Drying towel. This 26''x40'' towel sells for $25. It features stitched edges and tagless design.



I've been using these towels for years and have never had a problem with them.

Pros: Absorbent, ideal size, tagless
Cons: Don't stay as soft as others after laundering, stitched seams can feel a little rough

Next, let's look at these waffle weave drying towels, formerly sold by SoCalShopGuy. I'm not sure if these are still available anywhere else, but they are great towels. They were around $10 and a little smaller than the Adam's towel, but they were softer and had gentler seams.



Pros: Absorbent, cheap, very soft, soft borders
Cons: A little small

The most recent edition is the Cobra Ultimate Guzzler. This towel is a beast in every sense of the word. $35 gets you this massive 28''x44'' green towel with build in hand pockets for easier handling. I've never seen a towel suck up so much water. I dried an entire SUV (that had been stripped of all wax, so there was tons of pooled water) and the towel didn't even feel wet. It was incredible. It is also the softest of the three and is the only one with a lined border. This is my new towel of choice. It's a little big, but I just folded it and didn't use the pockets.





Pros: GIANT, absorbs everything, pockets, soft, finished edges
Cons: Expensive, maybe too big?- makes you spread your arms so wide you feel like you're doing something inappropriate with your car....

Next, let's look at polishing towels. The goal with these is to be as soft as possible, and to adequately remove polishes, sealants, waxes, or be used with detail sprays.

I selected four of the best to look at.

I'll start with the Adam's offerings. First is the single soft blue towel. This towel is a standard thickness, with a long nap, and a nice finished border. Tagless design makes this an ideal choice.This has been a favorite of mine for a long, long time.



Pros: Very soft, nice border, tagless
Cons: Can lint sometimes, long nap sometimes drags

Next is the double soft white towel by Adam's. This towel is what you hope would be in your hotel room, although probably a slightly larger version. Plush, thick, super soft, these towels just feel good. They have a longer nap like the single soft, but these are almost borderless, with just a touch of stitching along the edge.



Pros: Extremely soft, great for removing polishes
Cons: Pricey, don't care for the thickness, can drag a lot with liquids



The Zaino Borderless Blonde Towel is my go-to. This towel couldn't be softer, it has no border or stitching, no tags, and doesn't drag. It's a great polish or sealant remover. It has what I'd call a medium nap, but I really enjoy these.



Pros: Soft, tagless, borderless
Cons: ....?

Last up is the Sonus Der Wunder buffing towel. These come in a pack of 2 for $12, so they're cheap. I consider these to be only one sided because Sonus decided to stitch a tag into the same on one side. It's a very soft tag, but a tag none the less. Very, very soft, and the short nap makes it a great choice for detail sprays and buffing off sealants and waxes. Comes with a nice soft red border. Excellent towel and excellent value.



Pros: Soft, nice seam, short nap makes buffing a breeze, doesn't drag
Cons: Why did you have to put a tag?! This would dethrone Zaino if they didn't have the tags.

Very nice. I currently have only two of the SoCal white waffle weaves and it works great and as you say priced at $10. Would love to get my hands on a couple more of these "water grabbers".. I recommend them.

Autozone sells one like the big one but in yellow/cream color. for $25.00 My neighbor has one that he uses for his Mustang, I have used it once for the camaro works great. But first get most of the water off the car and I dryed mine with out having to wring it out..

Great write up! I'll have to give a to the Adams double thick towel. I refuse to touch my car with anything else again. Those days of drying with the Walmart towel packs are long gone.

Thanks for that info,I just got the adam's GW,before I was using some towels from armor all orange color,they seemed to work well.And I have some meguiars microfiber gold towels from years back,and I wash them in hot water no detergent and they are soft and do a really good job,and I now have adam's black all purpose and they seem to be of good quality as well.I just have one question concerning washing the microfiber towels,I have seen some detergents just for that purpose anyone here using microrestore,pinnacle or anything like those?

I'm worried the remnants would be more jagged or sharp than what is already there. As cheap as they are, I don't mind then being one sided. If you fold it in quarters that still gives you plenty of surfaces to use.

I have not. I'm kind of sour on Griots right now, but I'm sure that'll pass. And I'm addicted to buying towels so I'm sure I'll happen across some sooner or later.

I bought the Cobra Guzzler in a trio of sizes and love it. I have been using the jumbo size to dry my car and its great. Def best one i have used. The next size down (middle sized one) is probably ideal size for ease of use, but no matter which size u buy you wont go wrong.

Yeah, I kind of thought that all the waffle weaves out there were about the same. No, it's the Guzzler at the top and then way way way way down there is the next best towel.

I really miss the SoCalShopGuy waffle weave drying towels. Just as good if not better than Adams and much more affordable!
