A/c

So, I've been chasing down a charging problem with my camaro for months now. This past weekend I started her up. Turned on the a/c, and l started smelling like i smoked the clutch.... and then the a/c srarted blowing warm. Immediately the car was charging like it did before I was having charging problems.

Only thing I can think off that might draw enough amps to even cause the excessive draw would be the a/c compressor. Since I'm not a expert in a/c systems is there anything else in the a/c circuit that could potentially be the culprit? Also, the hvac fan is still working so I can rule that out.

Compressor is belt driven. Only power it uses is to engage the clutch. Not a big power drain.

I know the compressor is belt driven, and that the only electrical power it uses is to engage the clutch. My biggest question is, what in the A/c system can cause a large enough drain before it burns out? With my charging system working properly now that the a/c went out my only conclusion is that something in the A/C system was causing my issue.

I did not verify the clutch operation, my blower still works. I'll verify the clutch on monday since I'm out of town for work for the rest of the week. Any other ideas?

What do you mean by burns out? Can you see if the compressor is engaging? Does your windshield have a oily haze on it? Is the odor present before you start the car?

It's hard to tell from the other side of the internets without a little more information.

Alright so was able to check the clutch today it is not engaging. Anybody have the voltages for the clutch engagement?

Should be 12-14V or whatever the voltage regulator is allowing for. What's the resistance from the cluch lead on the compressor to ground?
