Hey, if you can throw away a few thousand dollars because you can't be bothered to sell privately, that's awesome. I'd love to be in that position some day in life. For me, if trading in vs. selling privately is going to cost me several thousand dollars, it's no contest, I don't have money to throw away.

I think you have your information backwards.

His car is worth $14-15k as a private sale, if he's lucky.

The dealership supposedly wants to give him over $17k for it (with tax benefits).

You're picking and choosing your quoting...

I would expect a more average trade in would be around $12k, and a private sale might get $15-16k. With those kind of numbers, I'd sell privately...
As I said previously, if the dealer wants to give that kind of trade in, and they aren't destorying him on the new car, he's pretty far ahead and should take the deal.

Out of crazy deal land, and back to reality, he'd be lucky to get $12k on trade, but should be able to close $15-16k privately. That's a $2-3,000 difference I wouldn't be willing to sacrificing as a "convenience fee" for trading in.

The car is literally brand new (It only has 16000 miles) and it has the cloth seating, premium wheels, premium sound, and other things. It is still under the CPO Warranty (Until August) . If you have any idea what to price it, I would be very thankful.

Take it to carmax and see what they'll offer you. You may be in a better position to negotiate if you have the cash in hand from selling it to Carmax.

Another buying resource is Carvana.com. They typically give fair market value after you submit your VIN, etc on their website. I tried them when my wife was car shopping and they were giving on the high end of trade in range.

Good luck.

I have been pricing 2013-14 ZL1's and preowned 2016 SS and find that KBB and Edmunds are anywhere between $3,000-$5,000 less than private party and dealer asking prices. Why so high?

$16k is a very high trade in, I was recently offered $17k on my 2011 SS in synergy green with 17k miles on it. But...most likely they are moving numbers around and it isnt a deal. What kind of price are they saying they'll do on the new car?

I lean towards selling private party. You do need to weigh the benefits of trading in - the convenience and potential tax break if you live in a sales tax state (NH = no sales tax!). Another consideration is cost to insure your old car while you wait for it to sell, and potentially losing the ability to get a credit on the new car's registration.

On the flip side, selling private party often nets an extra $3-$5k. My wife and I do fairly well for ourselves, but that is still a substantial chunk of money to give up because I don't want to put in a few hours of effort, so my preference is private party sale.

If you're still contemplating an upgrade but can't make sense of the numbers you are probably about to screw yourself...Sometimes doing nothing is the right decision and you may be in this category...I got a low ball trade offer on an '06 Charger w/less than 50,000 miles 9K for a car they would have sold for 16-17K, I ended up selling the car to my son for $5,600.00, he needed a good car, worst than I needed a screwing...I still made the deal on the ZL1 but I dictated the deal and was extremely satisfied with the outcome...You can do a few mods to your current car and be happy with it for a couple of years while saving for an upgrade...

If it's literally brand new, the trade in value should be better than that!

Based on what precisely? The 6th gen 1LT is available untitled around $20k and his 5th gen is 7 years old. A $16k trade in ($17K+ w/tax benefits) is a godsend.
