And my guess is that many of the guys arguing the most passionately against an automatic wouldn't buy the car anyway. Seriously, are there any legitimate buyers for a ZL1 who would decide against ordering one if an automatic were offered as an option? I really, really doubt it. And speaking as someone who owns a manual transmission 2010 SS, there are 100 better ways to define one's virility than by the ability to work a clutch. I've had manual transmission cars off and on for 30 years. If my next one is an automatic, I'm not going to apologize for it. Last edited by heavyt100; 02-12-2011 at 02:59 PM. |

Well..if you had an automatic you could laugh at the GT500 guys as they tear up looking at your tail lights.

You could do that with a manual, too...the automatic would just let more people do it.

No automatics. This would end up equating to too many ZL/1's on the road.

And that is a problem how? Chevrolet is in the business of selling cars, the more options that they have to achieve that end, the better. The only reason I haven't voted is I want a manual (and right or wrong I feel it is not right to vote for something I would not purchase); however, the option for an automatic, or a convertible does not diminish the car whatsoever. They made 20k + '69 Z/28's and they still go for a pretty penny these days, so I am not worried about future resale value. Seriously, we are not talking about Chevrolet making this rental car fodder.

You're right about that. And that's the odd part of no auto offered.

In any other situation, a driver makes the best decision on gear selection. Oh, and that gear selection process... is a lot of fun.

I can't decide which one. I know I'll have more fun playing around and powershifting and all that jazz with the M6, but I know it will be faster at the strip with some tranny tuning, sticky tires, and looser converter. It'll probably be easier on the rest of the driveline, too. I know if I would get an auto', it'd definately have a converter and tuning in it

There are very few downfalls in offering the Hydra-Matic 6L90. The first would be cost, NOT to GM but to the buyer. GM produces the 6L90 and was specifically designed for the engines GM produces. The cost to the buyer would add an additional $1800-$2500 dollars to the MSRP. Second, would be the torque rating on the 6L90. The 6L90 is rated at 550tq and could possibly hinder GM from pushing the LSA any higher than it already is (551tq). Third is weight, at 240lbs wet, the 6L90 is still about 40lbs heavier than the 6060 w/Twin mass flywheels and Dual clutch... but its only 40lbs... and lastly, production cost.. offering two different drivetrains could push MSRP up into the unpleasant... separate transmissions, driveshafts, final gear ratios and having the flywheels, clutches/clutch peddle assembly and torque converter on hand to produce what is demanded.
There are far more advantages to just offering the 6L90 in the ZL1 but if GM waited they could have a solid idea of what the demand is for an auto ZL1. They could also avoid the risk involved by offering two ZL1s in the first year and maybe generate some profit. They could also store the 6L90 for next year to generate a buzz by offering something new.. People are already excited, no need to go all in right now.. |
