Warning Noob questions!
Hello everyone. I have a 2011 SS Convertible. Later than sooner, I want to get a Super Charger. Too much money right now. Anyway, I have Kooks LT headers and Catback, a K&N CAI, a computer tune, and a 160 degree thermostat.
After talking to a few want to be mechanics, they said I should get a Cam. So, would getting a Cam wake my car up a little more? What type of Cam? Do I need to get anything else when I get a Cam? Obviously cost is huge. But can anyone give me a ballpark figure and time frame the job would take? I'm going through Rad treatment, so I have to really budget well. I appreciate the help in advance! Thank you!

You're 1.5 hours from East Coast Supercharging which is one of the very best shops in the country, you should give them a call.

If you are a auto, cam and conversion will run 3.5k about if you are paying a shop for labor/parts/tune.
Manual is probably about 1.5k I gained 75 or so rwhp from my cam. I went with a gt11, but switched to a gt9 when I added a supercharger

I paid $5500 for parts and labor on my A6. I did the LS3 conversion, but I recommend staying VVT as they have proven themselves to be better than the LS3 conversions. My mind set is if I am going to do it, then do it right and upgrade all the parts to minimize failures. Here is the list for my LS3 conversion:
BTR .660 dual springs BTR .740 pushrods BTR seats, locks, retainers BTR SLR lifters 3 bolt timing gear Katech C5R timing chain Melling 10296 oil pump LS9 head gaskets ARP head bolts, crank bolt LS2 lifter trays LS2 timing dampner Cam Motion Cam Circle D converter ADM transmission cooler LS3 valley cover LS3 front timing cover w/sensor Cam retaining plate 2 water pump gaskets Comp Cam trunion upgrade There might be a few more, but this is what I can remember off the top of my head.

Staying vvt is really only a option if he wasn't going to super charge. But as he said he wants to supercharge doing the full ls3 conversion is what he should do.

Are you saying that VVT + SC = no good? If so, I would like to hear more opinions on that from people like Rhino79 or the guys at Lethal Racing.

I have not heard of any high hp Supercharged applications running a vvt. I may be wrong, but I have not seen one talked about or posted.

He stopped at 654 rwhp. I don't even consider myself a high hp application and I'm low 700's now. I don't see keeping vvt going high hp worth the potential complications.

You'll need to delete DOD at least. With the cam, if you stay small/medium sized you can keep the stock torque converter. If you want something that has a good lope to it, make sure you figure a converter into your budget as well! We sell a cam installation kit as well that covers what you would want for the cam install as far as parts go - double valvesprings, pushrods, gaskets, timing chain, etc all in one shot. I'd also suggest replacing the oil pump during the cam swap as well. |
