Importation from US to Canada?

I was curious about this with the Camaro. As far as I understand there shouldn't be an issue at the border as long as you get all the papers in order.

The only issue I was worried about is the GM warranty. I was checking around and it seems that you have to wait 6 months after importation to register for warranty.

That seems to be the only issue that I can find but maybe someone with more experience would know.

As for the reasoning: I'm just looking into it because the car I'm look at out here costs $45,355 CAD, and the exact same car from the US would cost roughly $38,665.52 CAD. That's quite a large difference, especially when we have 13% sales tax up here in BC.

You may have a hard time getting a US dealership to sell you a new one. Used shouldn't be a problem, but new!?

If it was that easy everyone would be doing it. :(

GM's policy with this is not to sell New vehicles across the border. It is apart of the US dealer aggreement not to sell new. A dealer can get into hot water with GM for doing this. Once you bring it across the border and if it needs warranty work, a BC dealer can cause you grief. (I used to work at a dealer 5 niles from the WA/CA border).

The car must have been titled.( USED)

Can not be on MSO.(no demo)

You do not "register" the warranty....it moves with the VIN.

If the car has less than 7200 miles, then the warranty is on hold for 6 months in CANADA. You are so close to the 49Th if it was major you would take it to Bellingham.

I have imported 5 units in the last 6 years.

There is a great CAMARO on EBAY right now that was a casino prize, was titled and has 300 miles on it.

The dollar is on your side right now. BTW our tax is 12.0%. The extra fees are $195.00 .

As far as I understand it, the vehicle has to originally be registered in the states before it can be imported. So basically you would be looking at buying used. The price difference is ridiculous though.. you're right.. especially with the strong Canadian dollar right now it'd be worth it to buy over there if you could find something

Interesting. Makes it a bit harder but it does seem to be worth it to import it. I will definitely be looking.

RIV Canada .

Register of Imported Vehicles.

60,000 in one month last year. Every time the dollar goes over 90 cents.

I meant for the Camaro on eBay.

Yeah, I was checking out RIV last night.

As for it being titled in the US, is there any required amount of time that it has to be titled for?

If it was over 6 months then the warranty delay is gone. I put 3000 miles on my Silverado so that it would be at 6000 miles when I got it home. Had a nice holiday from Tucson thru 5 states. No issues with GM ..... THERE ARE WITH THE IMPORTS.

Yeah, but I have a lot of relatives in the US so I was curious if they could buy it and me buy it off them directly afterwards...Or does it have to be registered for a specific amount of time?

Then they will pay US sales tax, and you will pay GST and PST in Canada.

Unless you buy in Oregon. No state taxes.

There is no time limit. Buy it from a used lot and you pay no taxes until you come to BC.

The USA dealer can not know that your uncle Joe intends to transfer it to you. They CAN NOT sell a car they know is being exported. They have huge penalties from GM if they knew.
