To register my car do I wait for a title?
I haven't bought a new car for 10 years. I cannot recall if I need anything but the paperwork that I signed at the dealership in order to register my car. I have the insurance and dealership paperwork, but do I have to wait for a title or something from the dealership?

you just need the insurance and registration. You dont get the title unless you have payed in cash for the car or payed it off...then you can go do the title work.

In Massachusetts, if you finance, the finace company holds the title until the loan is paid off. If you're not financing, you usually get the title from the state in the mail after about 3 weeks. You'll need the sales agreement with the VIN# to get the financing if your financing outside the dealership. Just call your insurance company and tell them you need an insurance binder, you'll need the vin for that. (the lein holder won't give you the money unless they have proof there's insurance) Dealers in MA can now acess the RMV and transfer your registration and plates right at the dealership. But, not sure how things work in your state.

I did pay in cash, but they didn't give me any other paper (title) on the spot. But as long as I can get some license plates I'll be happy.

Some of these tag issues can be state specific. If you paid for tax and tags with the vehicle, you should get the title along with the tags for a cash transaction. The dealer has to take the MSO to the state and turn it into a title.

In Az when I have bought new cars I never had to "register" it. The Dealers have their own thing with the DMV so it is all taken care of. Im sure its different in most states though....

ok I found out that I have to wait and the dealership is sending the title in a week or so. I have to wait to license it until then...

either you are mistaken, or your dealer is screwing you, YOU don't need to registar your car, the DEALER does that for you, that was part of the paperwork you signed, that is why its called TTL, Tax, Title, & License.
