But does that contract stipulate you'll get their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, nth Camaro SS delivered? If not then it doesn't mean squat, other than yes you'll get it for MSRP. You may have to wait until they sell all the other SSs they get for MSRP plus markup, then they'll sell you yours. Would that be ethical? Not in my eyes. Contractually legal? Absolutely.

Maybe GM don't have enough Ls3 to split between the Camaro and Corvette.

The more I think about the news about the SS, the less surprised I am in a historical context. It is documented that this sort of high handed treatment (read: arrogance) of "the customer" has helped to bring GM to its current state. Take just one of the many former GM divisions--Electro-Motive. Once THE preeminent locomotive builder, they chased off their business by telling railroads WHAT they would build and WHEN they would get it. Well, GE was there to build and deliver, and EMD ended up being jettisoned in the midst of a boom in the locomotive market. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi...

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

Let's say you don't get your car until September or October. Excited just to get it you go ahead with it, store it until April of 2009 or whatever. Then 6 months later you find out they've added HUD, ABL, 3.73 gears, and offering 0% financing and $1000 cash back on 2011 models. That's the type of reality you have to be willing to accept to have something brand new first model year. I mean someone has to buy the first model year cars, but they nearly always get the short end of the stick in the long run. That's just how it is. |
