The General put more effort into styling than all out weight reduction and raceabilty. Styling sells more.

To be honest with you, I'd have to disagree. Ford brought the retro look back with the Mustang first. And they looked good at the time. Since then they have changed the body style and most of them are more boring now except that 2011 GT500 I saw last night. That one was nice. Chysler/Dodge followed with the Challenger, and they looked good at the time, but the inside sucks.. Then very shortly after came the Camaro. And all of the big 3 make nice muscle cars these days..... I wish I could have one of each..

I totally agree. That's kind of my point. The new Mustang came out in what, 2004 or 2005? Five years later, Chevy rolls out the new Camaro and it wasn't until then that the press started talking about how the muscle car was back. It's possible they needed more than one company to release a retro stylish muscle car to see it as more than just a fad but, the timing is a bit peculiar and leads one to believe that it was the Camaro that legitimized the retro muscle car movement. Then again, maybe I just see it that way because I like the car so much.

My 2011 2SS RS 6 sp. cost $36300.My 2011 Shelby GT 500 cost $55700.
If you take $19400 and and modify your Camaro, with the same stuff my car has, you'll beat me, and have a nice wad of cash left over.
The cars are not similar, as one is a dohc,4 valve,Eaton supercharged, factory cold air intake, and the other is a pushrod, two valve , naturally aspirated, engine.
I think the Camaro is really fast for the money.
The engine in a Shelby, is basically the motor out of the Ford GT,same block, and heads. The author of the thread has an awesome car, he just doesn't appreciate how good it is.

Things take time to brew.. Ford threw the mustang in the pot first.. It takes time for everyone to notice.. Thing are happening long before everyone notices.. I noticed the Mustang. I liked it. I thought they were nice, but wasn't sure if I wanted a muscle car at that time in my life. Then came the Challenger.. nice on the outside, boring on the inside. Now at that time people were starting to notice these retro cars.. Somewhere in the timeline the two transformers movies came along.. But the camaro was just a movie car at that point. In the first movie I said I want that car, but it was just a dream at the time.. By the second movie I said when and if they make that car I'm buying one ! Well, it simmered for a while.. Then they made the car.. I bought one.. So did many of you.. But don't forget it was ford that came out with the retro look first.. Maybe they didn't come up with the idea first, who knows, but they made it first and for a long time before the 2010 camaro. We have to give them credit because without Ford, chysler, and I think the transformers movies there wouldn't even be a 2010-11 camaro for all of us. When the next movie comes out I'll probably say I'm buying that one !

All true ! Couldn't be said better ! Except the OP owns a camaro and was just pointing out a version of the mustang and I was pointing out the GT500 also. Or maybe I misunderstood something here. The OP has an awsome camaro and doesn't appreciate how good it is..

Anyway the people who can buy and SS might be able to buy a GT500 some day, So, which is better since you own both? Oh, and are you paying sticker for your cars. My 2SS/RS TFE cost me $35657 ($38K sticker), and the dealer was asking $48K for the 2011 GT500 last night.

How the hell did this go from an aftermarket tuner kit, to a debate over an icon and the SS v. the Shelby ?

Just hangin around .. Things have a way of morphing into other things along the way.. Clearly the SS and the GT500 are two totally different cars in their factory form.. We will have to wait for the supercharged camaro to be produced before we can fairly compare the two.. It's just small talk right now..

The Camaro will always play second-fiddle to the Mustang in the eyes of the general population. Like it or not, the Mustang took America by storm when it was introduced and is now an American pop-culture icon. That's certainly not to say it's a better car than the Camaro, that's up to the individual to decide, but the Camaro will always seen, by the average person, as an answer to the Mustang. The same is true for the new generation Camaro. It is seen, by the vast majority of people, as a response by GM to the S197 retro-Mustang, and the upcoming Z28 is just a response to the now five model-year old GT500.

Maybe to people old enough to remember the 64 1/2 when it was introduced. Otherwise no, notsomuch.

Or take the 10 grand difference and get a SC installed/tuned and save $3000+ from the cost of a GT500!!

Now Chevy is not going to make the Camaro faster than the Corvette.
Just like Dodge is not going to build a Challenger faster than the Viper.
That would be like making the V6 Camaro Faster than an SS Camaro.

It isn't going to happen.
Exactly!!
