When I was a teenager my parents had a Taurus and a smaller Mecury (don't remember the model). The keys to the Mecury would open the doors of the Taurus but wouldn't start it or turn the ignition.
Very similar experience in my past as well.

That is a strange feeling, when something we count on every day, seems to turn on us.

That is indeed a funny story. I too have a similar story. When I was 16, my first car was a white 1985 Toyota Camry. I stopped at the local barber shop for a haircut. When I came out, I unlocked my car, hopped in and was about to start her up when I noticed a Gameboy in the passenger seat. For a moment, I was like "The heck? I didn't bring my Gameboy with me.." Then I noticed the auto transmission shifter, and realized it wasn't my car. Mine was a 5 speed manual. I locked the door, holding the handle up to make sure it locked as I shut the door. (Remember when some cars had to be locked that way?)

Then I spotted my car two cars over. I was stunned for a second that my key unlocked the door on the other car, but figured no harm no foul since I locked their door back for them. Got in my car and left. From the outside it looked exactly like mine. It was somewhat more odd though considering this was 1997, and I lived in a small town at the time.

The odds of my key unlocking another then 12 year old car, same color and make in such a small community was probably pretty small. I'd completely forgotten about that until I read the OP's post and the memory sprang back to mind.

Not that I keep my car dirty, but some people have more important things to worry about then keeping there car clean.
