My Drive of the 2010 Camaro 2SS in San Antonio...I GOT TO DRIVE IT!

Well...a dream of mine finally came true on Friday morning...02-27-09.

....I got to drive a new 2010 Camaro 2SS....

......and here's my story.....

----------------------------------------------------------------

It all started out with two great guys from the Ancira Winton service department...

Bob Dishong, my service rep for about 8 years now (an incredible guy to work with)....and
Anthony Jetter, the Ancira service shop foreman.

I've known these two guys for a while and they've always been good to me. They take care of their people...and know how big I am into this new Camaro. So, Bob calls me one day while I'm in the dentist chair and tells me the Camaro is at their dealer. A guy named Don who works for GM flew up to Detroit, picked it up, and drove it back. He's supposed to have it for 6 months. I ended up getting to see it for a second or two at Ken Batchelor Cadillac, but the guys driving it took off to lunch in a pretty big hurry...some of ya'll might have seen me talk about that. Anyhow, Bob and Anthony were told of that quick meet and they took it upon themselves to get in touch with Don so I could see the car again....for some one on one time.

I get a call...

-"The Camaro will be here tomorrow morning and if you are free, we'd like for you to come by."

Me-"Yep! I'll be free! Just give me a call and tell me when! I'll let everyone else know as well."

-"This is actually more of an invite only type of deal....just you."

Me-".....you serious??" <--yeah...HUGE smile from me at this time.

10am rolls around on Friday and I get the call. I'm on the way. I get to the dealer and Bob gets me to Anthony who introduces me to Don. Don takes me over to the yellow 2SS parked out front and unlocks the door opening it up. I lean over looking in....not getting in....because I've been told so many times "DO NOT SIT IN THE CAR!!!!"...

I ask and am allowed to get in.

.......

....the room in this car.....my God......there's just so much room in front of me...

....this is a production car, now....the dash is finished...and it's beautiful....and it feels great....

...the door panels are cloth, as is the dash....but it's a 2SS....hrmm....wonder if it has ABL....nope. Oh well...moving on...lots to see...

...the seat...I move it all the way back...and end up moving it forward again so I can fit properly (just as I remember in the IVER). Don mentions that Tim Duncan took it out for a spin the day before on his visit...and he fit just fine. Well, again, I'm 6'03" and 230lbs...and had to move the seat FORWARD to fit properly. Even then, there was so much space in front of me. (no worries for the big guys...there's PLENTY of room in this one! SO much more than a 4th Gen....THANK YOU GM FOR LISTENING!!!)

.....The gauges looked great. All layed out just like the pix we've all seen.

There's just so much to look at...and you want to press every button.....eek...what to do?!

...and it just comes out.....

................"This is too cool"..................

..."I know you can't...but the only thing that could EVER top this would be to take it for a drive..."

....and there they were....

...............KEYS...............

...dangling from a keychain being handed to me...and I was in shock! "ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!"

Don-"Yeah. But I have to go with you."

-"Uh....OK! GET IN!"....."Oh my gosh...oh my gosh....oh my gosh...."

I turn the key and there's that roar. I tap the pedal a few times and niiiicccceee.....I close the door and ....where's the sound? The exhaust sound? Dang! It's kind of quiet in here...I put her in reverse and check my side mirrors...HOLY...LOOK AT THOSE...."SHOULDERS!!!...as Scott likes to call them...hehehehe....It seemed as though there were these two rough edged shoulders just sitting there in the side mirrors. It REALLY gave the car character. It's got the same shifting layout as a 6 speed 4th Gen. Reverse is all the way over to the right and up. In reverse it goes and I back up.

It was lunch time and the roads were packed. Where to go? He says I can go wherever...I know the city....wherever I want. ...if he only knew where I wanted to go...and that I WOULD have done it had it had more gas!

So...I get out on Loop 410EB and head out.

Yeah...I can feel the torque. It wants to go, but I've got Don in the car. Can't just ..... flog his new 2SS, right?

The windows are rolled up and first thing I notice?

....NO road noise. In fact, it's pretty darn quiet. No tire noise...hardly ANY road noise. We are actually carrying a conversation here. But, you step on the gas and OH! THERE is the sound of the exhaust!

We pull onto the highway...yeah...people are looking....

Between the center gauges is the DIC. It reads in medium sized numbers "64" showing speed. Cool...digital and a regular speedo...

No radio...just us talking and driving...it went by so quickly.

I took it down to San Pedro and did the turnaround. BOY did I want to get on it. INCREDIBLY smooth ride. I mean...I was IMPRESSED. Better ride than the 4th Gens...

I could feel it stick to the ground around the u turn. I really wanted to get on it and TURN, but again...I don't want to piss off Don. It stuck in that little turn and I could tell there would be more. We take off in 2nd and I get on it a little. It moves. Still, I didn't get the full on torque, sit me back, neck snapping, take off.

No biggie...there will be a day...

We drive back to Ancira as the fuel gauge lit and a beeping sound started warning of low fuel. Thought that was cool.

We get it back to Ancira and I'm just.....in this disbelief, surreal, ...mode. I can't believe I just got to drive it!

I only got about 10 minutes in the Camaro. But, I will tell you this....

Of the three things I really wanted to know...

Ride....

Handling...

Power...

I found the ride and handling superb. I DID NOT get to drive it like I stole it...and I'm sure Don was thankful! I know you all would LOVE to hear about that!...but I need to stay in some folks good graces, ya know!hehehe

Over all...two thumbs up!

I can't thank Bob Dishong enough for remembering me when that Camaro came in. I can't thank Anthony enough for getting in touch with Don to give me that drive. Guys, you are GREAT.

Don, thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I LOVE IT!

Cool review .... I can't wait until I get a test drive soon

Sounds like though without an aftermarket exhaust, it kinda quiet

Truthfully, I'm very happy for you!!! Of all the members here on Camaro5, you are one of a small handful that really deserved some actual wheel time, ahead of all the rest of us. Congratulations!!!

P.S. Any more photos?
