Question about bigger wheels.

So unfortunately I can't upgrade rims yet, but after I was talking to my father about upgrading from my 18" stock steel rims on my ls, to the 20's that come on the ss he told me to make sure I don't need a new speed sensor for the bigger rims.

Apparently he had to get larger wheels for his car last year and the new size caused the car to register 7mph off of what the actual speed was (I don't remember if it was showing faster or slower)

He said this cause th car to clock 5000 miles on it that weren't actually driven before he realized it was incorrect. He said a new speed sensor was all that was required.

Also, he said be careful because changing wheels is like playing with fire with my warranty. Is that true?

Speed sensor?! No.

Just make sure that the new wheel and tire pkg are as close to 28.7" front and back which is what the OEM height is. Use this thread as your reference: http://camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62838

Sakino.....IF you get a set of 20's, whether they are factory or not.....what makes the difference your dad experiemced was the TIRES, not the wheels. As long as you are running the same DIAMETER tires as STOCK (front 245/45/20, rear 275/40/20), you will NOT have to change anything.

So there even though its an ls trim level, it will take the same tires/rims as an ss? (Basically you could literally just take the wheels off a brand new ss and stick em on and ls with no issues aside from resetting tpms?)

And any word on warranty voiding by doing this?

YES you can swap them out....I have an LT which has the SAME DRIVE TRAIN as your LS. if fact it was an OPTION to get the SAME 20's when I bought my car back in 09. and they ARE THE SAME WHEELS.

its not just the wheels or the tires. its your overall diameter which as mentioned earlier comes down to your wheels. If you match the diameter your car currently has to 20's... then no change. But if the diameter gets larger then its a change, and I don't believe it is very hard to do.

The diameter of the stock 18's and their tires is the same as the stock 20's and their tires. so as long as he wants to trade up to the stock size tires for the 20's....there in no difference.

Assuming both 18" & 20" OEM wheels have the same sensors, do they have to be calibrated to the new rims or is it just a learned process?
