all of the issues with the 1st 9" from everyone has been resolved, its not an issue. the real cost is about 6000.00 but that's not just the diff it will include both axles and a custom driveshaft so if you dont have those items (if you do and there ours we can alter them to fit for allot less) We have gone further than most realize there is an issue with the cars being lowered and we now have a different design axle that will work 100% in lowered cars, why ? we sell more axles and Diffs than anyone so we will not only see the issue 1st but will also correct it ASAP (and correct any that have been sold in the past, its what we do so dont ever worry about a purchase from DSS or its distributors)

a good set of axles will be 1200.00 to 1600.00 a good shaft 900.00 so if you take these off being you need them anyhow. The diff is only about 4000.00
We can offer any of these for that

1. Our 9" kit with the 33 spline Wavetrac (less for Eaton)
2. Hammerhead kit with the 33 spline Wavetrac (less for Eaton)
3. The New Dana 60 from strange, just released and a very nice piece.

dont let the numbers confuse what has to be done, any of these will hold up better than the stock diff, some may make it live like a stock axle but in the end the materials are going to get you. think about what i have written, give me a message if you have any questions.

The ZL1 rear also only has 2 gear options (auto and manual)...I don't know of anyone making aftermarket gears/diff's/axles/driveshafts for them...they may be strong, but they really limit your choices.

I am ok with the 3.73, I had a 3.45 and now a 3.91 and I think GM made the right choice on the 3.73.

I have the zl1 rear. The 373 gears was my choice of gears to go with the blower and cam setup I'm running. Not one issue with it. Not positive, but I want to say you will add about 100 lbs.

Keep in mind the Zl1 no warranty setup comes with a two piece shaft with rubber at each end...If you replace it with a proper shaft you'll spend as much or more than the proven 9 inch. When have I ever led you wrong

What about weight difference between the 2, I would think the ZL1 stuff would be heavier since it is larger and an iron case, but does anyone have any numbers to put on it?
Turbo, I have run my nine over 200 mph and it's smooth as silk... I also have a four inch one piece driveshaft... Breaking any of these items is the least of my worries... It was a little noisy when I first put it in, but that cleared up quickly...

I like the security offered in the stated warranty above by DSS as they have proven time and again they are good for it...

That interesting you broke a Turetrac, it's rated at 1000rwhp and they run them in the Strange Dana 60 setup you are thinking about going with, they do offer a Wavetrac option also I think, do you think it could have been installed incorrectly or it could have just been bad from the factory?

Pretty much what was already said. Those units are made for a lot of horsepower. It makes me wonder if it was installed properly, or if the correct fluid was used. Not sure if you now this, maybe you do, but, they say to use non-synthetic oil with that unit.

If it only makes noise turning right maybe you broke a spider gear if the Eaton has such a thing?

Keep in mind all Eatons will not be made the same, due to internal dimensions some will be better and some worse depending on how much
room that have to work with.

We recently did a repair on a ZL1 axle, man that was one big axle. did the axles bolt into the car after the install. i see the inner spline was different but other wise besides the weight (think it was 30lbs) it was nice looking part.

p.s. what did you do for the shaft, the rear pinion centric pin is larger.

I spoke to my Friend from Strange and i have some new info. on the Dana 60 the diff they supply comes with Stubs and there also designed for the cap we use on the end of our axles so if the axle is unbolted it will be clean.

The good news us they designed the Dana 60 to be able to be used with either the DSS stock X4 and X5 axles or if your thinking about changing from the 9" to the Dana they also have a set of stubs that will let them bolt right on. nice stuff.
