A Hybrid Camaro
It's been mentioned before, but never really discussed. Think about the Malibu, and the Saturn Vue. They both use the same Mild Hybrid system; it offers jumps in fuel economy as follows:
Malibu:.............22/30 Malibu Hybrid:....24/32 Vue:................19/26 Vue Hybrid:.......25/32 The system is a 4,000 dollar option in both vehicles. But remember that as more are produced, the cost will come down per unit. And if I remember correctly, GM wants to start putting this very inexpensive system (basically a beefed-up alternator and a battery) into more of it's vehicles in the future. In the Vue, curb weight with a 3.6L V6 is 4076 lbs. It drops to 3789 lbs with the Hybrid system. (Almost 300 lbs!!) Apply this to Camaro. Also, keep in mind as you think, that there are currently no attractive Hybrid Coupes on the market. NONE, not even the imports have one. This could be a great market to tap, and further revolutionize Camaro, and the Chevy brand as a whole. I've noticed that a lot more people than not are warming up to the idea of Chevy offering an 260 horse I4 Turbo model, now that they realize the potential for sales it has, and the realization that they don't have to buy one. So after reading the very limited info above, what are your thoughts about an I4/V6 Hybrid model? |

I personally don't think its worth another few grand for just a 2 or 3 mpg increase.

A hybrid Camaro might be a great marketing idea, but I doubt there would be a hybrid V8 with 400 hp, and I'm getting a 400+ hp model no matter what. But for some the hybrid v6 Camaro would be a dream come true; fuel economy and a badass looking ride.

the money you spend on it now for the extra mpg would equate to the money you would spend on gas if you went with the normal version.
if they could work out some kind of electric drive system for the front wheels i would do it. front wheel electric motors for cruising (and a sport mode to get you all wheel drive on those hard launches)

I am ok with the 4, but I want a V-8, even if it is the 300hp + 5.3 with flex fuel and active fuel management which should get good mpg in the Camaro RS. Of course the LS3 or ? with 400hp+ has to be there for the Z or SS.

I think GM's mild hybrid should be offered on pretty much every car. Greater availability reduces cost, and unlike full hybrids, it has a very small impact on weight and space.

And, the cost associated won't be $3000 for every car FOREVER. I do think it should be offered. Hell, I'd even consider it for a V8. Could you imagine?? Sitting at a stoplight and the guy next to you is wondering at what you might have under the hood???? BUT, he hears NOTHING unil you let loose?!?! BAM!!! I am open to any hybrid system on the Camaro. mild, dual mode, electric front wheels for city/super launch.
And isn't the mild hybrid system a beefed up alternator and starter? kinda hard to drive a car with an alternator

I voted for hybrid. I think anything to save gas is good as long as it does not reduce performance. I don't care if it is powered by the methane from cow dung as long as I have at least 400 HP.

Personally I think a diesel would still do better as alternative engine variant to the gas engined models. For me, a hybrid just wouldn't deliver on the performance I'd want. Especially when I wanna rev up the engine cruising at low speeds just for the heck of it.

i want them to make one but i dont just want it to have a few mpg increase. in order for that scheme to really sell it would have to be well in the 30's.
Don't mess around with it because it is a vacant market, but to fill a vacant market with a hybrid that doesn't give you that much more to the gallon than b4, isn't going to dominate it. i want to see one model of the camaro to be well in the thirties...that would crush the market for good and help sell the camaro for a very long time. Why does the vue hybrid get a lot better results from the hybrid system than the malibu, in Dragonye's original post?? ?? |
