Why the power difference L99 vs LS3?
I don't understand why FI LS3's are making more power than the L99 cars?? You'd think the L99 would get better power gains due to being a bit lower in compression? What's the issue?

Don't forget that if all things were the same internally, the automatic transmission will cause more power loss to the wheels than the manual.

True ....Drive train loss is higher for the Auto .. but the compression ratio on the L99 is better for FI .. not because of more power but it's "Safer" than a higher compression Engine. Hence the 11:1 on the Mustangs 5.0 .. scary for boost over 6psi.

I would suspect cam specs have some blame on that as well....

Not to mention the ability to rev the LS3 higher making more boost I would suspect as well. Of course same boost level it would just come down to the cam holding the valves open longer in the LS3.

LS3 - 10.7 compression That is what I have seen (not positive), but seems almost neglible.

The cam and cr is the difference in the hp numbers.I would prefer the higher cr for boost until you are over 20 psi .

Chalk it up the biggest offender the automatic transmission, at least a 5% difference in output versus a manual car.
Then obviously there are other marginal differences in the engine. Regards |

Yeah must be the cam. I just looked up the specs...
L99: Valve Lift (in): .500" intake/ .492" exhaust Camshaft duration (@.050 in): 195 degree intake/201 degree exhaust LS3: Valve Lift (in): .551" intake/ .522" exhaust Camshaft duration (@.050 in): 204 degree intake/211 degree exhaust This would definitely account for the power difference - especially on a FI car. I think the VVT of the L99 is a good idea, but after having the AFM for around 8k miles and having it tuned-out for 2k, I'd say it's more of a hindrance than a help. Kind of wish the A6 came with the LS3 but oh well, I have no problem turning a wrench or two |

Really I would have to say the biggest reason was to keep the automatic cars from paying the gas guzzler tax. Remember the GT0's , the auto got the tax and the manual didn't.
I think GM didn't want to repeat that. |
