I was told that getting a CAI will be damaging to the engine in the long run because of all the dust that would be going into the engine.

Is this true? (I live in a desert)

Only if it's a cheap-o with a less effective filter. Power can be made with out losing effectiveness of filtration by drawing in cooler air outside of the engine compartment and smoothing the flow of the air to the engine.

Edit: By smoothing air flow I mean removing baffles and expansion chambers (stock air filter box) which quiet the intake, works much the same as exhaust.

I live in the desert also and I installed the Dodge Cold Air Kit on my Dodge Magnum which has the 5.7 Hemi engine and have had no problems at all with performance. The only change that I had was an increase in mileage, I get close to 30 on the highway and it runs alot better. I also heard the same thing at the dealership and the person had no facts to back up his statement. Needless to say I already have the intake ordered and paid for, for my Camaro. I also have the K & N filters on my 1987 Camaro RS and have had no problems with it either.

You will not have a problem as long as you maintain the filter as called for by the manufacture. Like cleaning & oiling or changing it when called for.

Unless the "long run" is going to be more than 50 yrs......

Both the stock intake system and a cold air intake use a filter. So that doesn't make sense because then both will cause damage.

Just like the factory air filter, you must service a cold air intake filter as well.

To be honest I am pretty sure they trap dust better than a paper factory filter as well.
