2011 SS M6 versus 2011 M3

What are the odds when both are completely stock in a straight line?

The odds are in favor of the M3

Here is a close example

Looks like the M3 starts to pull on the Mustang towards the end, despite it's trap speed it looked like it's rate of acceleration wasn't decreasing as much as the Stang's.

I'm going to say it is actually a drivers race, but if I'm throwing down money it would be on the M3 stock vs stock.

with the transmission with paddles, the driver has very little to do with it. instant perfect shifts every time.

Drivers race. I was dead even with my friends 09 M3 when I had an L99. With my Ls3 I think I could have pulled on him on the top end. It's the weight that plays to the camaro's disadvantage. The Ls3 engine, however is superior in ever aspect compared to the S65 (M3 engine)

S65 / LS3

weight 445lbs < 415 lbs

power 414 hp < 426 hp

fuel economy 14/20 < 15/25

torque 296 ft/lb < 424 ft/lb

replacement cost $20,000 < $5,000

The M3 has a gearing advantage along with the dct transmission. So off the line it may be slightly faster, but the SS should reel it in in the triple digits. There is a roll race video out there and the SS pulled on the M3 nicely at the top end.

Wow, thats a pretty big difference in Tq, you'd think that's be enough to make up for the weight difference. Probably end up (like stated above) as a drivers race.

One thing I notice alot with foreign cars is that almost all of them I look at, they have low torque numbers. I think the SS is the best bang for buck you can get right now. Sure the SS has more weight than it's competitors, but it's engine puts out damn well and has lots of power and low end torque.

there's more than enough torque to make up for the weight difference. the M3 weighs more than the 5.0

BMW 335D makes 425 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm and gets 36 mpg lol....

Low end is torque great in the half a second your car spends there through the quarter mile or pulling away from a light but after that its now longer needed as HP starts to take over especially when your shifting and making peak hp at 8,000rpm vs the smaller window of power from the LS3.

The only reason need or enjoy low end torque is when I was towing my Rockcrawler with my Cummins or if its at the track and I'm getting 1.7 60 foots in a 8,000lb 4x4 disel truck and killing it during the 1/8th but my lack of hp keeps me in the low 100's in the 1/4.

You realize that BMW revamped the M3's transmission for the 2011+ models. 2011+ M3's with that newfangled DCT tranny they've got cut more than half a second fro their 1/4 mile time. Stock for stock, just based of the numbers on paper and mag racing, the M3 wins.

On paper it seems that the M3 should win. However sometimes it dont work out that way. Both cars have their advantages. That’s why I say its a drivers race. Since the SS doesn’t offer a DCT, manual vs manual seems like a better apples to apples comparison. with similar power to weight ratio (3704/414 & 3888/426) it becomes a drivers race.

Wow, that torque number blows. Less than 300.
