Opinions needed 1970 Firebird Formula 400

I was looking at this car and was wondering what you guys think this will be my first car and don't want to over pay http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...035634172.html |

I think I would stay away from this one. Add says it needs int. and paint then it says it has new paint. Im thinking it was a quicky paint job for a sale. Price is quite high also. if your set on a 70" bird I would keep looking I am sure you will find better.

Agree. I bet it has a bunch of bondo in it too... If you really are set on it. Walk around the whole car with a magnet and make sure you are getting metal everywhere. I had the camaro SS/RS version of this car and they rust like crazy. only way to fix it is to replace panels. I think they did a quick repaint for a high priced sale etc as well...

I'm partial to the "Big Mouth" formulas......but
Problem is firebirds get no love in the collector community...means not a good investment...have to love the car. The biggest issue is rust.....you have to put it on a rack and inspect the bottom. Otherwise #matching....looks straight....from poor pictures. That front duraflex mouth tends to warp...and they don't make replacements....but this one looks straight. The 400 engines were dogs......but trans and diffs are strong. But good candidate for 5.3 conversion + turbo $6K-8K would be a good deal. |

Look at the rear frame rails, around the rear window, and quarter panels for rust. I think Speedmon is right, 6-8k.

hmmm, ad says needs paint, but has new paint? (maybe needs interior paint?)
new weatherstripping and carpet probably means it had some leaks, definitely get it on a rack and check out the floors. I agree, price seems a little high unless the body/paint/undercarriage are real solid...but hey, it's got a bluetooth stereo.

If you're looking at a firebird for 11K......
Here's a better deal I think..... 1970 Camaro RS (not #s matching but that wasn't gonna get you much on the firebird anyway). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-...item3f18449d5e This is a clean looking car and the asking price is not bad. And its a camaro, which appreciates better than the birds. The prices on 70-73 cars have really taken off lately, cuz the 69s prices are dragging them along. And he's in NY which is close to Canada, but far from vancoooooover. Here's a nicely restored RS/4spd at Classic Car liquidators. Their prices are always good.....I really like the price on this car, cuz you could not build (restore) this car for this price. I almost bought this car. I just have too many cars right now. This car needs no work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-...item3a756b3aa7 Last edited by speedmon; 06-05-2012 at 12:34 PM. |
