They have to have something to brag about with the current car, because even though they've improved handling a great amount, I don't think that's going to be enough performance for ZL1 as far as we know. They're going to have to search for bragging rights in other ways, and horsepower is probably where they're going to go for it at, IMO.

First off i'm not going to knock anyone who would prefer to purchase a mustang, its thier choice in the matter.

For me personally the whole topic concerning this car has this HP and is 10 HP more then its competition gets old pretty fast. It's like who makes the best radar detector in any given year.

I like the styling of the camaro, and the fact that thier coming out with
this ZL1 is freckin awesome. I was so close to buying a 2011 SS earlier
this year (untill I heard of the cough soon to be released Z28) I decided to wait longer. Thiers so much going for this car, the only thing I could ask for would be a couple of unique colors. Just think of the publicity this car can bring to GM esp (hint hint) some special cool colors.

So - can some of us stop worrying, lol? Seeing all these posts and threads about people panicing about not getting the faster car lately is almost funny.
LOL Radz....for sure, that's an understatement!

Agreed, if we take the information at face value it's seems to me it's going to be like waiting to see who stages first at the tree with the coming of next gen's between us and them. Both current platforms will remain relatively stable and static with marginal improvements until then. It would be financial suicide for them to offer that 650 HP deal anyway, uber dinero.

When it arrives in early 2013, however, the next GT500 won't get more than a superficial redesign. The full redesign for the Mustang line won't arrive until sometime in 2014 for the 2015 model year. What it will entail, or what can be expected in terms of weight, performance, size, or styling, we don't yet know.

We will keep our ears to the ground and our sources close, however, to bring you the latest word from inside the Blue Oval as the next Mustang takes shape."

Possibly we may just have some jabbing and rope a dope going between us and them until the release of the next gens around the same time, then the swinging starts up again, for reals.....

Twin turbo or supercharger really doesn't matter. The current 5.4 with the FRPP blower setup could easily make the projected 650hp. The real question is - what are they going to do with the suspension and tires? Any extra power with the current suspension setup would be useless from a dig. The 2011 handles great, but can't put the power down at low speeds. It will be interesting to see what tire they use and what changes to the suspension come with the 2013 model year and if they're enough for zl1.

We have got to be getting close to the point of diminishing returns when it comes to power..... I would not be surprised to see the manufactures really start working on getting the power to the ground and not just throwing HP into the new cars.

IMHO, horsepower might sell these cars, but soon, people will probably start to appreciate the chassis nearly as much; I think the GT500 has started that trend because of it's traction problems. I'll poke fun as much as I can at those cars, but the fact remains that entire line has a lot going for it. I'm a Bow Tie fanboi to the core, but I give respect where I think it's due. Perhaps it's easier for me to justify ZL1 for the alleged ability for it to make use of the power it will have; those statements by GM probably motivate me to think so highly of it. I think the GT500 wasn't really initially designed to turn, so it did it's job well. ZL1 is changing that game, because it IS designed to.

If GM really wants ZL1 to elevate the segment (and it sounds like it does), and if it doesn't at least remain competitive with the horsepower levels it's reasonable to expect from the GT500 through to the next generation, I think it's best they extol the technology of the rest of the car. I think they've come out of the gate strong doing that already, but they'll have to push harder if they want to continue to make a significant impact in this segment.

The bottom line for me is that I don't want excuses. If you say you want to dominate, DO IT. I don't care that ZL1 has to have the most power so long as it can use what it has to cross the line first. I have full confidence GM has as good a source as anyone outside of Ford, and that both companies already have a fair idea what the other is up to. I truly don't expect many surprises over the next few years with either car, but already know which one wins my heart.

I really think a lot of people are going to be shocked when we see the ZL1 turn some laps at a good road course! In my opinion it has a lot going for it the GT500 wont be able to match in the handling department.

Amen to that.... Power ratings are great but I care more about lap times!
Awesome post from beginning to end!

"So much for the rumors that the Ford Mustang GT500 will turn twin-turbo. According to reports buzzing around the web, the meanest snake of all will hold onto its supercharger for the foreseeable future. Even so, that blower will supposedly ensure that Ford will have a beast capable of besting the power figures produced by the menacing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Currently, the GT500 is good for 550 horsepower, and some sources have indicated that the 2014 model will come to the table with at least a 20 pony bump in grunt. Even with 570 hp on tap, the vehicle isn't expected to be a complete redesign when it arrives in early 2013.

Instead, a completely fresh Mustang is slated to show its face in 2014 as a 2015 model. Specifics on that particular beast are murky at best, but chances are we'll hear more as the years tick down. Keep your ears to the ground.

While there are still many details to learn of about ZL1, there are even more about a soon-to-come GT500, but it's all rumor until we get information from each company. Of course this article is only another rumor, which is my point. Why get all worked up unless there's reason to? I don't think we're going to see many, if any, significant driveline changes or upgrades to the GT500 until the next generation, and that'll be close to when we see the next generation CAMARO, so I think this rivalry is going to be absolutely GREAT!!!
Until they deal with their traction issues I'm not too worried about hp. Besides you could do a simple adjustment and the zl will have well over 650.

There are people that are easily impressed with just the hp numbers. It takes more that that to have a great car. The mustang has major traction issues. Just look at the super snake. 750 hp and can't hook up to save its life. Major tire spin from 0-60 as well as track times. The ZL1 is much better IMO.

I'll stick to my prediction that the ZL1 will come in at 600

ZL1 all the way!!!

For me this part of the title says it all :
will come with Camaro ZL1-beating power

That could mean even the same HP as the ZL1 though since it will weigh a bit less ..

You bet, I had a modded 03 for 4 years and I should have kept it instead of buying a gt500. By far the most fun and fast car I've had. Only had 6800 miles on it when I sold it. Hopefully a cam in my SS will make me feel better.

If this is true the 1st year ZL1 will smoke the 2012-13 GT500. It will look better(IMHO)handle better and be faster. As long as the price is similar to the GT500, the ZL1 will take round 1.
