IMHO I think the RS5 would beat the SS pretty easily on a road course. But, the SS will beat the RS5 for sure on a drag strip.

well first of all he said S5, not RS5 they both have V8s though. im not so sure about the RS5's handling though, it has the weight distribution of a twig with a lead weight attached to 1 end and actually weighs MORE than the camaro.....not very good qualities to have for a road course.

although for all intents and purposes the RS5 and SS are tied in the quarter

on a road course.

it seems like it's prty much guaranteed that the ss would win in the 1/4

Yeah sorry, i thought he was asking about the RS5 somehow

I have driven the S5 (the new 3.0 supercharged one)and i can tell you that it really hides it's weight very well. It's weight distribution isn't that bad as you make it seem (52:48, although one source states 58:42 and no info about weight dist on the official Audi website), and weighs ~3800-3900 lbs depending on options. It also feels very nimble because of it's trick 'torque vectoring' rear differential.

lol...Its the RS5 that has the awful weight distribution, not the S5. the RS5 was weighed by Motortrend in their recent comparo against the M3 and CTS-v to be just shy of 4000 lb and have the weight distribution be 58/42.

Not exactly the comparison requested, but I happen to own an S4 and have an SS on order. I'm certain the S4 would win on a sufficiently twisty road course while the SS would definitely triumph any drag and maybe a less technical road course.

I'm not sure about the S5 though. It is a little lighter than my S4, but it has a diff engine orientation and therefore weight distribution. Also has the supercharged V6 from the newer B8 platform, whereas my S4 has the 340bhp V8 from the B7 platform. Either vehicle has the edge on the Camaro with the Quattro awd.

Thing is, it would take exceptional handling to trump the acceleration advantage of the Camaro.

I agree and the right course. Say something like Watkins Glen or the old Riverside course would be advantage Camaro. Infineon or maybe even Nurburgring advantage to the quattro car.

Just checked lapped records at the NRing and it looks like a B7 RS4 went around in 8:09. Edmunds took the SS around in 8:20. Eleven seconds around a track like that could come down to driver skill level though.

I'm also a little out of date. The cabrio S5 has the SC V6 but the coupe has the same V8 as mine.

RS4 isn't the same as an S5. The 2007 S5 (same as the new ones) clocked in at 8:26. At VIR, the Audi S5 got 3:14.6 vs 3:09.5 for the 2010 Camaro, both were done by Car & Driver. Those are the only two tracks that I could see where the Camaro and the S5 had both recorded times. Though doing laps on 2 different days with 2 different drivers makes things a bit murky when trying to do a direct comparison.
