It uses PC2700 RAM which is like $40-50 for a stick, I might as well buy a loaded desktop for $400 then. So I guess the Dual Core and Quad Core is old technology now giving way to the i3 i5 i7 ? Is that a correct statement? If that is the case what if I went for i5 4GB Ram Dedicated Graphics Integrated Sound |

And the i-series are all Quad core right?
Here are two I see from dell now that I am thinking about. Am I way off track? Intel Core i3-540 Dual-Core @ 3.06GHz; 4GB RAM; 500GB HDD; DVD burner; gigabit; Windows 7 Home Premium; NVIDIA Geforce G310 512MB; card reader; 1yr warranty; Gigabit Ethernet $469 or Intel Core i5-750 Quad-Core @ 2.66GHz; 4GB RAM; 1TB HDD; DVD burner; gigabit; Win7; ATI Radeon HD5450 1GB; card reader; 1yr warranty; 15mo McAfee SecurityCenter $679 So a $200 difference. Both easily in my price range. Or there is this Laptop too Dell Inspiron 15R Intel Core i3-330M 2.26GHz 15.6in Laptop (4GB/320GB/Win7) $549.99 15.6" 1366x768 LED; Intel Core i3-330M Dual-Core @ 2.26GHz; 4GB RAM; 320GB HDD; DVD burner; 802.11n; Windows 7 Home Premium; webcam; 6-cell battery; 1yr warranty + 15mo McAfee SecurityCenter |

LOL you said it brother haha. Ill have to talk to the wife and see how much loot I can drop on this. If she said whatever i might try to go for an I5 powered laptop with 4GB and dedicated graphics.

That sound like a good unit. I know it's very easy to go overboard when buying a computer. Good luck!

It seems like the i5 and the i7 are similar in build but the i3 was intended for entry level processing. Since I don't need top of the line but don't want bottom I think the i5 is the best pick.
A quad i5 seems like the right choice with 4GB. |

i5 is most likely the chip that best suites your needs. |

Just for the heck of it I slapped together a system on Compusa.com for ya. The price includes the cost of Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit edition. It has integrated sound and graphics that I think would be fine for what you're doing (comparing it to what you use now) but I included a good video card for $50 if you wanted it. It's an ASUS mother board which is good stuff and and an I5 650 3.20ghz processor. The board will take an I7 so you could always upgrade later. It's got a decent case with a 500W power supply and 4GB of ram a dvd burner and a 500GB 7200RPM drive with a 16 MB cache which is good because it's fast. A lot of the time You'd get a 500GB drive but it's only 5400RPM and a smaller cache and it makes a BIG difference.

Interesting. It seems like the processor is better then what dell offers but rest is similar. I have never really built a full PC before but I have installed drives and hard drives. Im sure I could figure it out but is it worth $650 for all that and then have to put it all together with no warranty when the Dell model that is similar comes pre made with everything installed for about the same price?

All your parts would still have a warranty.
Though in the first post you say you are into downloading high quality HD movies, you best get a 1TB HD or even 2. 500gig can be filled up fast with movies. |

I already have a TB drive external, 250GB internal slave and another 30GB internal. So I am fine on memory What I am confused about is the video cards. Some people say the integrated ones are fine, then others say the NVIDIA GeForce G310 or the ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3 (which dell offers above the integrated) are not even enough. What if I bought an i5 based computer with integrated graphics and sound with 4gb ram and then bought a graphics card aftermarket so I have more options then what Dell lets you choose. Could that be a possibility? Im just really stumped as to what/why people say even the two dedicated cards above are crap, if that is the case why would you ever want integrated graphics? My current computer is Dell Dimension 4550 X86 based system x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel 2392Mhz (Pent 4 2.4) SMBIOS 2.3 Total Memory 768MB NVIDIA GeForce MX420 (i assume this is dedicated? no clue) Santa Cruz Soundcard (Iassume this is dedicated too?) |

bugs me when you call hard drives memory. Its not a typical term, as to not confuse folks. Ya call em hard drives or storage drives.
ram is memory in PC talk, and I think that'a all you need, put 2gig of DDR in that board. Id glady take your system and that's all it would need for me, more memory. On Video cards you can never have enough, and soon as you do, next week a better card comes out that makes your worth $5. I got a P4 celron 2.93 1.5gig of memory Gforce6600 256meg ANd can do anything I want that runs on windows 2000, hate xp n vista, havn't tried 7 but have to have a newer PC for that. |

Problem is that i have a 512 chip and a 256 in there. In order for me to swap them out and put in 2 1gb chips it would cost over $100. Is it really worth investing $100 in a 9 year old computer that is out of warranty with just old technology all around?
It can't do DVI or HDMI right now amongst other things. |
