Cant pick between them. We just got our first dog (Chocolate lab). We currently have 3 cats. All are indoor animals (dog of course goes outside). Cats are 2 bengals (~2 years old) and 1 domestic shorthair (~8 years old)
Cats can be just as much a companion as dogs, just depends on the cat. All of ours are!

Birds...
Just b/c that's all I have right now  -- not allowed to have pets living at home. The birds drive my parents bonkers. Believe it or not the one on the left is the baby - born in the cage to two of my other birds (mom is now deceased, but dad's there on the right)... She's fatter now and definitley the boss of the cage... I am more of a cat person -- I don't mind dogs, just never had one. Some dogs are super cute, others are just ok -- but most cats are cute to me so...  Although... Cat's can't take the wheel and drive for you while you nap on roadtrips.....

Two Chihuahua’s (one long hair, one short hair) Three Italian greyhounds I'm allergic to cats, so I have to be a dog person.

Cats all the way. I've always had cats and they've been just the perfect pets. We had a Silver Chinchilla persian that was just over 18 when she died and a Blue Persian that was just over 19 when she went. Those were two tough days. But now we have satan's cat, a fat black shorthair. Love him.
Oh yea, we also have a black/tan dachshund. He's an idiot.

I prefer dogs...but got 2 indoor cats cause I always lived in a apartment...now that I'm living in a house...the wife and I can't seem to find the perfect dog!!! Reason being cause we wanna rescue a dog...so your options are limited.
