Z/28 302 Rumors

Anyone else hearing rumors about a new z/28 sporting a 302/5.0 engine. The engine may be an all new overhead cam or may be based on the 5.3 GM motor under bored. Suspect it won't happen in this body style though probably slated for the new platform in 2014 or 15. My bet also would be that its an all new motor.

What?! I'd pull the the trigger on that purchase in a heartbeat. Built on the new platform of smaller and lighter?

Havent heard but it would be pretty cool. It would also be a tribute to the old DZ 302 engine. You are right though, I don't think it will be in this body style, with the weight of the current car, more torque is needed, but with a lighter car (new body style) a smaller high reving engine would be awesome !!!

I doubt it. There was only one reason why GM used a 302 in the original Z28, and that was the Trans Am rule book. While that particular engine holds some cachet with Camaro enthusiasts, its not nearly the same as the love that the Mustang crowd has for their 5.0.

And it would be a special engine, for a special car. In other words, it would be very expensive. Like twice the cost of a typical small block V8. For an engine that would almost certainly get out performed by a 6.2L gen V engine in every conceivably way. The high reving nature would make it less efficient, the small displacement would make it less torquey (and therefore less powerful), and the DOHCs would make it heavier. What exactly would be the point?

I highly doubt it also. Would be too expensive to put in 1 model only.

Only way I see that happening is if it goes into the Corvette as a base engine as well.

I'm one of those that loved the old DZ302, while I would like to see Chevy build a new 302cid (to compete with the Boss 302), I really don't see it happening.

No the 302 won't happen, but it will be a great day when GM brings out the ALPHA platform Z28 say with a 5.5 or 6.2 DI engine pushing no nonsense 500HP.

would definitely buy a convertible Z28 - bet I'll get the 1st allocation - just sayin and hoping folks at GM high up are listening - ZL1 is great but too much. Build a Z and your dealers will have plenty of 2010/2011/2012 SS's LT's on their used car lots - i know my beautiful RJT 2LT will be up for sale.
