BTW how many threads have their been about the ZL1's on a roadcourse? under 10
How many drag strip threads? hundreds
I would say 1/4 mile tracks are way more accessible then road courses. Almost a test & tune every night up here, road courses maybe once a month and a lil pricey

Overview from my perspective. Importance falls to handling. Power can always be added. The ZL1 handling package, with Stabiltrak, Traction Contol, and PTM...is industry leading.

That $5k is more than enough to get you low 11's, now you have a car that outhandles the GT500, a more comfortable DD, and quicker in the 1/4 for less money.

And common sense once again rules! Great comment.

Seriously though, the ZL1 is the most well rounded performance muscle car. Didn't want to say sports car. That's for the ZR1.
Great handling is MUCH more difficult to build in than adding power (just ask Ford).
I will say the ZL1 is the far better GT car (refined and good at everything). And honestly the GT500 is the better muscle car (brutish, less refined). There I said it.

They said at the time they were trying to sell it to the military for the use in the troop carriers.

Shortly after that, GM started using it in their H1's and it went from there, to where we are today.
I've never seen the show detailing the goo, but a friend of mine who is a recording engineer says that audio speakers use the same principle as the ZL1 suspension. The large magnet at the rear of the speaker interacts with a thick fluid containing small metal particles. He said that this technology has been used in the audio field since the /60's or so.
Others in the know may be able to confirm or deny.

IMHO, the ZL1 should have been the boulevard bruiser and factory drag racer as the original 1969 ZL-1 Camaro were.

If you wanted a corner burner with road racing pedigree, then GM should have offered a Z28 (much like what is being done with the 1LE).

Hypothetical question: if you could turn back time and be the chief engineer of the ZL1 and trade the ZL1's superior handling (and say go back to "SS" level handling) for superior 1/4 mile performance - would you do it?
Yes. I'm a drag racer, so that is my bias.

Price was brought up....being a drag racer, I'd get the base car (be it ZL1 or GT500). The prices are essentially the same (not counting gas guzzler), which does away with those arguements.

Again...based on my drag racing bias.

Well, The ZL1 name is synonymous with drag racing. So on that basis I would have built for strip if building a ZL1.
I would have called the handling car a Z-28.
JMHO.
