Agree, the 2010 is too new to have multiple data points from different tracks, conditions, or cars. It has only been on the streets for a few weeks. However, the 2007 GT500 has been out for a while, and trap times are well established in the 114-116mph range. What will 40 more HP and more agressive gearing do for the '10 GT500? Btw, I am not a "Ford guy", or a "Chevy guy".... just a car guy.

It is faster. It is more powerful.

But the small difference in performance is not worth the extra $15-20 grand, in my very humble opinion.

EDIT:....match ups like these make me VERY curious to see what the Camaro would do with better rear gearing...

But I'd rather spend $33K for 426HP and get beat by 1/10th second than $50K with 540HP.
Slap a Procharger on that SS.......OMG! 191HP more for $6,896, now that's a deal.

Where you going little blue oval.......lets have a re-match!!!

I'm almost certain I'll beat your SS by more then 1/10th of a second with my GT500. With those Goodyears on. I don't magazine race. If somebody really believes there is only .1 second difference between the two cars your nuts and seriously into fan boy territory.

Perhaps they should keep a copy of this Motor Trend issue in their car so that, when they get their doors sucked off, they can press it up against the window in protest. Seriously, this is that ridiculous. I saw the same thing happen with the 03-04 Terminator versus WS6 and Z28SS and even back in the day with the 87 Grand National and stripped Mustang LX trunks.

And I do so love the 'if the Camaro has a Magnuson' debate, arguing that a modded SS will hang just fine with a stock GT500. Good luck to these guys on actually finding a stock GT500 on the streets that isn't on the way home from the dealership.

Show me a stock Camaro SS in the low 12's and I'll relent. Until then we just have a sea of SS owners hoping that the GT500 they run into has a mediocre driver.

On the same token, Mustang guys apparently had a fit because they compared a GT to an SS, even though they're absolutely direct competitors...

Yeah that was also a sweet video! Id say even with the mods that guy had on his camaro it was still smaller price tag than the GT500. But even the stock camaro did alot better than I thought it would.

all this shows is one of the quickest stock ss runs is only a tenth of a second slower than a slightly above average run in a gt500.

pre 2010 gt500's have gone as quick as 12.2. with 40 more hp, better gearing, and better tires, i still dont understand why people think these cars are competitors.

yes the gt500 is quicker, and with equal drivers, a lot quicker. the SS is also a lot quicker than a GT, which are closer in price.

let the cars be out for a while, and better weather conditions for racing before drawing conclusions.

I never complained about the GT versus SS comparo and still find it a perfectly logical matchup. As for the price difference between the GT500 and the SS. We both know better than to think that you'll somehow squeak into a car that combines the longevity and durability of the GT500 setup, as well as the easy tunability, for much less than the price difference between the two.

GT500's make reliable, driveable 800hp cars on premium unleaded without ever touching a valve cover. And were talking about a car you wouldn't know wasn't stock in most situations. And that is a major part of the cars draw, the ridiculous power that can be made for cheap. If you want to crank out that kind of power in a Camaro SS, have it act like it was made for it, and do so in reliable trim, you'll shell out some serious coin.

If you are looking for a simple, bolt on car to get you into the 500hp range, and a Vette is off the table, the Camaro owns the market right now. This is particularly true if you want to accomplish the same naturally aspirated. Want more than that? Unless you are brand loyal the GT500 is going to get you there easier and cheaper.

The reality is that we all know the GT500 is faster than this article indicates, you included. Mediocre drivers on whatever road USA?????......the GT500 might not win by much from a stop but, to be honest, who cares what mediocre drivers can manage and who here really wants to be or remain a mediocre driver? Good drivers on a decent road? We both know how that story goes.
