You don't see this everyday!

I work for the power company and a few weeks ago one of our MAN medium speed diesel engines went into over speed. They normally run at ~418 RPM but this one ran up to 575 rpm before she shut down and this is what happened! All of the cylinders and pistons got damaged, more than likely the crank shaft is screwed and the generator needs some work done too......looking at a few million $ to fix this booboo!

No one had a phone book handy?

That ones thing I learned about those big type engine, smart mechanics keep a phone book handy n close by, if it get away from you like that, they toss the phone book over the intake. And it usually eats a good 3/4 of it before it dies, but does allot less damage.

I think they narrowed it down to bad timing on the fuel pumps from the factory.

The bad part is that they just overhauled the unit and was running a few tests before putting it back on line.
This thing only ran over speed for about a minute and a half.

The phonebook trick works sometimes but on this bad boy it probably would have chewed it up and spit it out, besides that I would not want to have been standing next to it when it went.

I'm thinking if the rods are almost as tall as a man the intake is considerably larger than a phone book LOL

Y'all use diesel generators for the power grid or just for power to the building?

We use them for the power grid. We are the only power plant for the whole island and use a total 16 medium speed diesel generators and 2 diesel turbines.

well I don't see it every day.....but I have seen it twice! I too work for a power company.....and over the last 25 years we have had two crater. ours are 20 cylinder Coopers, they are the size of a locomative, each of our 6, powers a 5.5 megawatt generator, thats what we have for back-up generators....both times a rod was thrown out of the engine, once through a side cover, and once through the block. it took a while, but we fixed them both.
