Comprehensive L99 to LS3 conversion parts list
I'm wanting to convert my L99 to an LS3. I would like to compile the exact list of parts required. I realize that there are reasons beyond just the conversion that most would want to do, but for the sake of understanding exactly what's involved in ONLY an L99 to LS3 conversion, I hope to compile a list of ONLY the parts required for that conversion. If, for example, it is required to change the cam gear or tune out AFM/DOD then please let me know so that I can change the parts list below to include that.
To date, I have managed to figure out that I need at least these GM parts:
Please help me fill in what I am missing. |

If you're doing it yourself you should send an email to a vendor here. They'll give you a good price on the kit and suggest other stuff you might like/ need.

Understood, and Thank you for the input. I've seen several kits from various vendors. Most are in fact geared for other things that one might want/need. For example, one vendor lists a cam gear with his, another does not... which one has ONLY the ABSOLUTE necessities? Although I am formulating a plan for the car, I would most like to know exactly what I am buying. Kits from vendors range from just over $600 to well over $700. I'd just like to know exactly what's required to do the conversion so that I can make a better informed decision without other farkles/niceities/cool-stuff clouding my understanding of the basic requirements. I'm not really interested in pricing though. At this point, I just want to understand. worrying with the dollars is just another distraction to the understanding.

Venders
If you read through the different Forums on here you will be able to make good decisions on which venders to trust just by reading their posts and how they interact with people on here. IMHO Jannetty is one of the best. Their honesty, customer service, and professionalism is matched by very few on here. If you have questions about any of their packages they are quickly answered by a phone call. The LS3 conversion kit is in the 700's but because of my interaction with them and the quality of their products, i will pay the extra because of the trust I have in them. If there are any parts NOT required in their package a phone call would answer that.

Texas Speed sells a kit that has every part you need. It's equal or cheaper then what you can buy the parts for on your own. We used it last week on a friends' G8, exact same install as an L99 camaro. Can't go wrong, we had zero leftover parts.

Thank you for you input. However, information on selecting a vendor does not help me understand what parts are involved for the swap.
I had a bad feeling that my post would result in a exactly what I got. No useable information. IMHO, this is a forum. As such, I would expect that it is a place to learn and understand. 99% of the posts out here could accurately be answered with "call a vendor". What's the point of having a forum if that's everyones answer? I would have thought that a good forum would be full of gear-heads eager to learn and understand. I'm not looking to buy anything at this point. I am not looking to waste a vendors time and run up their phone bill by calling and asking questions with no intent to buy. I do not believe that is fair to them. If I wanted to buy a kit, I'd call a vendor and buy a kit. I'm not interested in that. I am researching the parts to do the swap. Just for my own information and education. Sorry for bashing on you guys... I'm just frustrated. Two days of searching didn't net me the information I was looking for. I thought making a specific post would help. |

This is a post from LS1tech; don't know if it is accurate-- L99 is the 6.2L engine that comes in the auto 2010 Camaro's. They come with VVT and AFM. The normal situation is to swap lifters, lifter guides, head gaskets, head bolts, camshaft, cam gear, front cover, (sometimes) oil pump, valley cover, and then tune the computer. It is basically to take the cam phaser off and take the DOD off.

I bought the DOD delete kit from Thunder Racing. DOD delete kit had the following: -GM LS7 Lifters -GM LS2 Valley Cover -GM Lifter Trays -GM Head Bolts Added -GM LS3 Head Gaskets -ARP Head Bolts I did not use the GM head bolts and instead went with ARP head bolts. Now a custom grind non-VVT turbo cam is going in so it requires the L99 to LS3 conversion. VVT delete kit has the following: -GM Camshaft Position Sensor Harness - 12627501 -GM Camshaft Position Sensor - 12591720 -GM Camshaft Sprocket - 12586481 -GM LS2 Timing Chain Dampener - 12588670 -GM Front Crank Seal - 12585673 -GM Front Cover - -GM LS9 Head Gaskets - 12622033 -ARP Head Studs - 234-4317 -ARP Cam Bolts - 134-1003 Switched to LS9 head gaskets and ARP head studs this time around do to going FI. The only thing I did not see on your list was the following. -GM Camshaft Sprocket - 12586481 -GM LS2 Timing Chain Dampener - 12588670

I know you will need a tune to turn off the cam phaser and to tune for the new cam.

How much does this conversion cost (parts/labor)?

I was looking at texas speeds stuff to do a VVT cam swap and that was just 1500 or there abouts... IMHO it should not be that much more to do a complete LS3 conversion. maybe 2000..

This has been a recurring question, and I personally think that if you're tearing into the motor like that you might as well install a different cam and actually get some serious gains. It would be an awful shame for you to do the LS3 conversion, and then 6 months down the line you decide on camming it when you already spent a pretty penny on labor.
