Come Slither: Shelby Super Snake is the ultravenomous version of Mustang GT500

By Arthur St. Antoine

Perhaps you can't wait for the spring 2008 release of the Shelby GT500KR. Or perhaps a 540-horse supercharged Mustang is "merely adequate." What you need, then, is a Super Snake.

An ultravenomous version of the GT500, the Super Snake is a pure Shelby special-a limited-edition, hyperpowered Mustang built with mostly Shelby parts in the company's Vegas assembly facility. Deliver your GT500 to Shelby, fork over the requisite cash (pricing had not been set at press time, but expect to pay around $10K for the upgrade), and in a few weeks you'll have a Super Snake of your very own.

The bodywork closely mirrors the KR's-including a KR hood, hood pins, Shelby stripes, brake ducts, and the 20-inch forged Alcoa rims seen on the KR showcar. Inside, the Super Snake sports new gauges (boost/oil and fuel pressure), custom Shelby sill plates, a Ford Racing short-throw shifter, and a numbered dash plaque.

The best stuff lies under the hood. Utilizing the KR's cold-air intake and a new, larger-capacity Ford Racing supercharger, the Super Snake will romp with over 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, standard. Not enough? With optional tuning, Shelby will provide up to 725 ponies providing you're prepared to give up your warranty. This special Shelby will also get the Ford Racing Handling Pack, including stiffer, adjustable dampers, lowering springs, a front strut tower brace, and beefier stabilizer bars. The lower 3.73 rear axle of the GT500KR should provide for some blistering acceleration figures and the Baer six-piston brakes with super-sized rotors are employed to bring the Super Snake back to a standstill.

Shelby says the Super Snake will be in even shorter supply than the GT500KR. Production will start late this year, with most required parts also available separately from both Ford Racing and Shelby Automobiles by June. Earsplitting burnouts soon to follow.

i think theyre trying too hard, 4 holes in the hood 6 lights, shelby on the hood, racing stripe down the middle, super snake and another stripe down the side, "hood pins", window louvers, the shelby snake symbol 3 or four times, two holes in the bottom grill(cold air induction?) and they still have the audacity to put those F-150 side mirrors on it, details are usually the key to making a great car, i think they over-did it, and not in a good way....

how many special editions do you need though. heres my thing, if a car company is gonna put out the best thing they have in terms of performance then why is that performance changing with each special edition? But i guess they are trying to sell as many cars as possible because that is their job.

All these special editions really piss me off when it comes to the Mustang, because it is all a marketing ploy.

They have all these editions that make all this great power, but they are so exclusive the average person has no chance in hell of getting one unless they pay out the wazoo.

So people end up being attracted by the Saleen Parnelli Jones Ed, Roush, Saleen, Shelby GT, Shelby GT-H, GT500, GT500KR, GT500 Super snake, etc, but find out that they can't get one so they settle on the regular old Mustang GT.

I like the styling of the latest Mustang, and I think it's a good thing, all the "special" editions FORD pays tribute to Mustang's heritage with. That being said, they're priced out of range for the majority of enthusiasts, and personally, the styling on some of the "special" editions is too "boy racer" for me.

The 'Super Snake' is B.A., but if I had the kind of money it will take to buy one, I'll have the money to buy the upcoming "ZO7" (or whatever the "super Vette" is going to be called), and once again, I'll have a car that will outperform and look better, to me, doing it.

Can you tell I'm GM biased?!

Geez, how many air vents does one car need? Looks like this car received the business end of a machete.

I agree with Moose, this car is too boy ricer to me. I mean, the one thing I LOVED about the early muscle cars was that they were simple, stylish, and POWERFUL. This car fails 2 of the 3. Would I buy one if I could afford it? No. Like moose said, for the money this thing will command, you can pick up a beautiful Corvette that will simply put it to shame.

They mention the huge HP numbers, but what about the weight? Is this gonna be a 4000 lb pig like the GT500?

Actually all the extra lights, hood vents, and scoops are in the tradition of older Shelby GT500s.

The hood of the 1970 Shelby GT500 looked like swiss cheese, it had three hood scoops and two vents. It also had side vents and scoops on the fenders.

Here is a picture if anyone is interested.

Ford had nothing to do with this special edition. However i do agree that ford is trying too hard with all of the special editions.

That looks like they used LUND to accessorize that thing, all it needs is a luggage rack. Yet another tuned version of the Mustang - come on...

This is like colt in the firearms industry.. they make so many special editions nobody gives a rats ass that it's one of 150 because the next week they started a whole new batch of 150 with a different color and one changed part.

you can have 725 ponies, I wanna see you put it to the ground! I'll take 500 from the Z06 and the extra $$ left over from not buyin a rustang and tweak it a little more and spank the stang all day long. and if it still mangages to outperform, ive got some nails for the tires!!! lol
