From Indy to the coast of NC
We are wrapping up a trip where I visited my parents on the east coast of NC, and what a fun drive that was. We left Indy last Friday and made it to VA to spend the night, as I didn't care to try and drive the 13 hours in one day, and it was more of vacation, so no "hurry up to get there".
That is the second "long trip" we have taken in the camaro, first was to Valdesto, GA. Driving through the mountains of W VA, and VA was super fun. Once we hit NC, I asked the wife if I could go back and do that again. Rolling down the mountains at a "spirited" speed, and the car just hugging the road and passing people, wow, that was fun. I think I still have permagrin all over my face. The weather was gorgeous the entire trip, and through the mountains, sunny and 73. Coming back, we have stopped in Evansville to visit my wife's family, mother's day fun, so we came back a different route. Coming through the NC and TN mountains was just as fun. I was in a group of cars all running mid 80's and it was a freakin blast. The car drove like a dream the whole time and was super comfortable the whole trip. Even the wife agreed and had a blast coming through the mountains. Now the important stuff. Driving to-from Indy/NC, still cheaper than flying (that includes hotel accommodations). I averaged 22.5 mpg the whole time. I do have headers/Solo Catback exhaust and a tune, and with all the 'spirited' driving, up and down the mountains.. I was super trilled with those numbers. It was all Interstate and Hwy. After such a great visit with family and friends, I will be driving the camaro again for future visits. I just wanted to pass this along to those that may be considering driving long distances, how with the car handled, gas mileage, comfort, etc. If I had another week off work, I would be planning another trip, it is that fun. Speedy needs a good washing now. |

Coming back from picking up the car in South Carolina, we drove through western NC and Eastern Tenn. and I gotta say, man was that fun! We took a detour off one of the Tenn. interstates to go to Gatlinburg, and that parkway was by far the most fun I've ever had driving!
I totally get what you mean about rolling down the mountains. Those areas have roads we can only be envious of here in Indiana. We got 40MPG in the car we traded in. We got 26MPG in the Camaro. Worth it.
