Is it programmed? Look around for programming procedures. I had to program a new key when I got it, involved following a programming procedure. There might even be one on C5 if you look hard enough.... like here:

Your dealer is an idiot.
1) Take old key and turn the car to the "On" position. DO NOT START THE CAR. Leave it here for a few seconds. 2) Quickly turn the car off and put the new key in. Turn it to the "On" position. DO NOT START THE CAR. Leave it here until you see a message on the DIC saying something like "New Key Programmed" I forgot the exact wording. Afterwards turn the car off and remove the key. Whole process takes about 10-15 seconds. |

I bought key off eBay, put old key in, started it, immediately took old key out, new key in, started and it worked. Everything including remote start and trunk/door release was programmed.

It's probably cut imperfectly, maybe they gave you a wrong spare?

I think once you try the new key before programming the right way it cannot be programmed by you using the method described here by Mr Draco. You will need to get the dealer to do it.
